anybody good at vam attribution???

hey guys this is my first post on this forum so hopefully i wont have probs posting my pics but just incase i will give a written descripition of the coin also.
i recently purchased a 1882 cc morgan in the gsa holder.after looking at the coin closely i started to notice all kinds of neat die variety issues,i have checked the top 100 and the hot 50 and so far have not been able to attribute this one.maybe someone here can help me.

obverse
doubling of the upper lip and curve up to nose
also what looks like half of an o mint mark poking out from under libertys cap edge about parrallel with the gap between the last m in unum and the first star.

reverse
almost too much to list here but i will try to hit the hilites.
doubling of tail feathers
doubling of cc mint mark
doubling of some laurel leaf edges
doubling of america
doubling of certain parts of in got we trust
some doubling of one
quadrupled clash marks between laurel wreath and right wing tip
doubling of both stars.

i will try and post some pics hope fully they will come out ok.
thanks in advance for any help on this.

well looks like 50k is the max file size and i seriously doubt you would be able to see anything from a 50k pic so i guess my descriptions will have to do.

if anybody is interestd though i would be happy to email pics.

From your description, sounds like mechanical doubling. But if you would like to email the pictures to me, I will put them on my site and post them here. My email is:

OK, got the pictures. I am not going to post them here, since this is an easy one. There are no significant VAMs for the 82-CC, they are all pretty common due to the amount of the original mintage that survived thanks to the Treasury hoard. Your coin is a VAM 2, with the 882 in the date doubled, along with the entire legend on the reverse. It is a pretty good example of doubling. Unfortunately, with the amount surviving, it is not worth a premium over a normal coin for this date.
  • hey man i really appreaciate your helping me out,it will be great to have this coin attributed reguardless of wether it holds a premium,it's all about the fun of the discovery for me.i do have a few more questions though, and was wondering if you would mind if i shot you a few more pics to look at.

in your post you say the vam 2 has doubled 882 in the date but as far as i can tell mine doesnt have date doubling.
on the obverse i would definitely say the attribution key would be the doubled lip and the whatever it is sticking out from under libertys cap,
i reaslise that the pic i sent of the lip it wasnt all that obvious due to the lighting and out of focus, and i didnt send a pic of the other oddity at all, so if you wouldnt mind i am going to take some more pics tonite of the dats and the other things i mentioned and send those to you to look at.

not that im trying to argue with your diagnosis i just want to be sure and i cant beleive the lip and cap issues wouldnt have been mentioned when they are visible to the naked eye, and i cant see any date doubling even under 10x mag.

thanks again for all your help.
  • hey man sorry i didnt have a chance to take any more pics today, but i will still try and do it later if you are still interested,
i was told today however that this coin is currently not listed as a vam but is in the breen listing as #5570 unfortunately i dont have a breen book so i cant verify this

anybody got a breen book and want to take a peek????
    thanks again for the help.
