Darksiders! I come in peace seeking knowledge...

Hello,

I have had these coins for quite some time and have no idea what the heck they are. I realized I forgot the reverse (?) of the first one and my pictures are horrible (lighting and flash issues), but perhaps you will still be able to figure this out... I've always been curious about these, but don't know anything about them.

Thank you!

We kill Lightsiders and eat them over here! Would you rather be baked or cooked over a flame?image

The first is from the Sasanian Empire while the second is either from the Byzantine Empire or Eastern Europe.

  • Thank you for answering. I prefer to be toasted lightly over an open fire, then gently seasoned.

It is interesting over here. Some of these folks have some lovely coins...

    Nice.

I'll bet Civitas can attribute them.

  • The second one is a Venetian grosso. Unfortunately, from the scan it is impossible to determine when the coin was minted.

During the 14th century the Serbians minted very good imitations of these (they even circulated in Venice, albeit counterstamped, AFAIK), but I don't think your coin is such an imitation.

Howdy! Nice to see you over here. Come back often. We won't divulge your secret inclinations to the evil Lightsiders.

The Sasanian coin appears to be a Hormazd IV.

I believe the grosso acutally IS a Serbian (or Bulgarian) imitation. I believe all Venetian coins have VENETI somewhere in the legend, but I could be wrong.

    Nice coins either way.

    On the menu today:

One Lightsider, plump and tender, lightly killed and roasted in herbs until golden brown. Served with dinner roll and corn.

  • Corn? Are you mad?

I believe I merit a lovely green salad with fresh garden tomatoes and avocado.
  • An additional question before I go to the fire... Will PCGS slab these?
  • AskariAskari Posts: 3,713
No, they won't slab coins this old. I think the 18th century is about as far back as they go, but others here (who actually sl@b their preciouses) could tell you more precisely.

As for the avacado, do you prefer California or Icelandic? (I hear the latter is to die for, so it might be most apropos.image)

PCGS has slabbed coins dating as far back as the 1100s as has NGC. ICG will slab even older coins.

Isn't ANACS the only one doing ancients? I've yet to see anything pre-17th in a PCGS slab -- when did they start doing that?

My oldest PCGS coin is a 1582-3 English Shilling and my oldest NGC is a 1199-1216 English Penny. ANACS did ancients for a short time, but does not slab them anymore.

Welcome to the darkside! Reading the thread title reminded me of Sting's song:
