Just found out today I'm losing my job.

So I guess I can work on the book all that much harder...and the website, web design for others, my online store, eBay sales, and whatever else it takes to keep the clock ticking.

  • I'm sorry to hear that you lost your job. That can be very frightening and disconcerting.

This happened to me about a year and a half ago and I ended up completely changing careers. In retrospect it was a blessing.
  • coppercoinscoppercoins Posts: 6,084 ✭✭✭
Actually I'm not quite at liberty to say why while I'm employed.

I believe I have what it takes to start focusing on the stuff I want to do rather than just getting another mindless job. I'll give it a shot for a while and see how it works out. At worst I'll be looking for a job in a couple of months.

Sorry to hear that, Charles, but with your skills I am sure you will pull through just fine. Hang in there!

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • My dad worked retail for almost 25 years... his store went out of business, the state paid half his tuition for retraining, and now he's a Network Technician, and he makes a lot more money now... so, I guess sometimes it can be a blessing... but sometimes it can be a real bummer... Good luck!

CopperCoins: I'm sorry to hear the news about your job. I wish you the best in whatever you decide to do. I strongly recommend that tomorrow you go to your local bookstore and purchase the book entitled "What Color is Your Parachute?" by Richard Bolles.

It's a very uplifting personal self-assessment book for those who have been forced to make a career change or simply for those who are currently dissatisfied with their career path.

As others have said, thsi could be a blessing in disguise that will lead you into more interesting and better things!

  • Best of wishes to you, coppercoins. I also lost my job at the end of February 2004. I have been looking for another engineering job or perhaps changing careers. I also have a side business (real estate), but I need to do a lot more. image

I agree. I went out and got this book plus the workbook. Richard Bolles has been updating this book annually for many years, and he is definitely a career guru. Other good books are: 48 Days to the Work you Love and 48 Days to Creative Income, both by Dan Miller. Here is his web site: Dan Miller's Web Site on Career Coaching.

Sorry to hear that, Charles ... but then, from my experience it can be a blessing too (albeit a stressful one). I've gone through that several times in my industry and I can honestly say I earn more now than I would have had I "stayed at my desk" just taking the paychecks as they came. I hope you'll be a happier man a year from now! image

With what you have going on, forget about getting another job. Work for yourself. the true entrepreneurial spirit. All the profits of your labor and experience will be yours instead of "the company" taking their cut. Slice and dice; you might as well keep the pie, good luck.

That's exactly what I'm thinking, actually. I don't NEED the corporate world. If I ever do, it'll still be there.

I truly believe if I focus on numismatics, writing books, selling web service and design, working on my store, ebay, etc. etc. I won't have the TIME for a J-O-B. I'll already have one!

My hope now is that the book I am currently working on printing will "make a name" for me in the national numismatic community to a point that I can work on some other ideas I have that have not yet been published and be taken seriously for what I know and what I can learn. This corporate job just wants to stick me in a corner counting beans and never take advantage of what they have in me, and it makes me sick. It also takes me away from my family, which is another thing I can't stand about it.

Hi C.D. I too am really sorry to hear about the loss of your job. I hope things work out for you quickly. The little I know of you from these boards, I think I can fairly say that you are a tough cookie with a strong resolve and a strong character. It is people like you that will always find a way to not just get thru a situation, but to end up in a better position. I hope you find a way to do what you enjoy because you will do it well. Your numismatic knowledge is, and always will be, something that you can use to your advantage. Good Luck Chuck-John

I lost my tech Support job a year ago and will never do corporate again. Started a web design company and am making as much as I was at my old job. COBRA payments suck but you need health insurance.

Don't think about it as a bad thing, though it may be a bit scary, become your own boss and you will be ok. When you are put into a position like this, you will be surprised as to what you could do.image

    Look on the bright side.

You are better off than me. I'm still in college. I have no full-time job. My bi-weekly paychecks suck.

You'll do fine. At least you have job experience. ha

Thanks to all of you for the words of encouragement. With what I have to go on from the powers that be it looks like I will be jobless by then end of the month, but I do have a lot looking up with everything I have going on the internet, and I have additional ideas that I will now be able to pursue. While others have taken job loss hard, I see it as a door opening for me.

    Thanks again..

I've been there. My school savings were invested in a safe place, a municipal bond mutual fund, that the managers stole from and lost 90% of its value in a single day. I had to leave law school, and where did I find a job? In bankruptcy services.

The lesson is always worth repeating: Plans are fragile; people are resilient. You'll get through it.

I remember feeling down when Caterpillar closed the doors on us. I took a year off, enjoyed myself, and went back to work for a small company as a machinist. (My specialty) I was there only 1 1/2 years and was offered day shift ahead of many other people because of my skills and attitude to my job. I have been there for over 3 1/2 years now and love the place.

    You'll do OK Chuck!!!.....Ken

  • Hi coppercoins. I’m very sorry to hear that you lost your job. This is so common today as the corporate mindset continues upon its treacherous path of pink slipping everyone but the so-called upper management elite. Yet, “management” (so-called) seems to find the funds to vote themselves raises, bonuses, perks and other traitor laced golden parachutes (all while making speeches about NEEDING to layoff thousands of workers at a clip and sending so many jobs overseas - all but there own jobs of course). This arrogant, tyrannical practice has been a tremendous affront to employees everywhere across America, and to the shareholders who actually OWN the Company too.

Coppercoins, you are a very intelligent person as your wisdom and skill in Lincoln Cents illustrates. I’m certain you will excel at whatever path you decide to take (whether you seek another job or venture into a numismatic pursuit). Unfortunately, like so many other Americans you are now a statistic - and it is a statistic that will not likely be accurately reported in many of the so-called “economic reports.” So many of my friends and neighbors have been unemployed for well over a year now. They are NOT included in the so-called economic figures, jobless claims, (etc) despite the fact that they remain UNEMPLOYED (though all of their unemployment benefits have long ago run out). My prayers and hopes are with you and your family. matteproof

Coppercoins: Best of luck. I 'm confident you'll succeed one way or the other. I selfishly
hope you can make a go of it without the "day job".

SIgh...I was laid off of my first two jobs. (Animation isn't very stable!) Unemployment is no fun but it humbles you. It made me realize that many people are still worse off than I have ever been and that It doesn't take a lot for someone to end up in an unfavorable situation. It taught me not to judge others and it taught me that having brains doesn't always mean you'll have a job. These are tough times but you'll be fine.

MRK - Pretty much my thought theory exactly. No sense in trying to find another corporation for whom I would be a body to fill a desk and completely unimportant when I can be really important to a lot of people, which is how I feel here and on the site. Not a regal important, more of a brother important. Thank you.
