Still think 1990 Hockey is one for the ages

It's a shame no company got all the big rookies in one set but I think years from now 1990 hockey will still be hard sought after. The list of HOF's RC's (jagr, federov, mogilny, modano, roenick, belfour, etc), fan faves (Domi, Recchi, Potvin, etc.) and semi-star rookies (Sundin, Nolan, etc.) goes on and on. And somewhat early cards of Sakic, Roy, Lemieux, Leetch, etc don't hurt as well! OPC Premier and Score Canadian will lead the way. I have been picking up 1990 OPC Premier sets left and right in the $50-60 range. Think you could see $400 or more when these guys hit the hall in Toronto if Bettman can keep the sport alive.

  • don't forget upper deck french ! it was 600$ a box back in 92.

but opc premier will be the big one. it has to be one of the best card sets,
and most attractive sets ever made.

may the force be with you.

OPC Premier is THE set for that year. It's too bad they didn't get Brodeur in there... the set would have pretty much been perfect.

Too bad Premier '92 was such an over-produced, under-rookie'd let down.
  • If Brodeur was in there it would have been the perfect set. You should look out for the uncut sheet set....very nice to frame.

It's still a very popular set and the production numbers were not too high like Upper Deck stuff from the 90's...

    Welcome to the boards.

This set has been discussed on these boards before. There was a common feeling that supply would far outweigh demand for quite some time. Also, in my opinion, if you are paying $50 - $60 for 1990 OPC Premier hockey sets you are paying way too much. Where are you purchasing these sets? I just checked Ebay for completed sales of these and the last 2 factory sealed sets, which sell at a premium of a hand collated set both ended at $34 and change. Most hand collated sets have been closing at less than $18. I remember selling an OPC premier factory set on Ebay about a year and a half ago for $70+ $$. I'm not trying to burst your bubble here, just being realistic. If you really like this set and want to " invest " some dollars into it, pick up some PSA 9 rookies and stars for less than grading fee. You can even bottom feed on PSA 10's for not much more.

    Good luck with your collection...

I'm having a hard time resisting these HOCKEY posts lately. Keep em comin eh!!!image

  • Yeah, I have seen on ebay the factory's a little cheaper but I got burned where people opened them up, took out the rooks and re-shrinkwrapped them so I buy from a reputable dealer and I consider the extra $15 I pay the insurance.

Duh on me I have the upper deck french too. I still think Mogilny is a sure HOF with his 1000+ points and name on the cup, that he has been somewhat overlooked. I may be biased as i'm a Sabres fan though. Now living in jersey for a long time, I have been blessed to have went to almost every Hasek/Brodeur game at the Meadowlands.

    Cheers!
  • I remember the days of selling Jagr PSA 10's for $200 USD +++, and a KSA GM 10 even went for $325 USD at the peak. Last time I looked, a Jagr PSA 10 was going for $40. This set, like the rest, has had it's peak and now is a good time to cherry pick GM 10's for a reasonable price. Don't expect these cards to pay off like an investment though. The fast money was made a long time ago!
