In order to keep my collection small, I am forced to sell coins I like to buy coins that better fit my current collecting goals. This very original, nice-for-the-grade 1854-O $10 is one of those coins. I do this with some reservation because nice, original No Motto New Orleans gold is very tough to find and even more difficult to replace. Nonetheless, it must go to make room for soemthing else. Trends in 45 is $1100. Greysheet quarterly is $530 in 40 and $1200 in 50. (As an aside, it is very annoying to me that greysheet only reports a small number of the grades and fails to report the grades most commonly seen in No Motto gold).

According to Douglas Winter's authoritative text on the subject (New Orleans Mint Gold Coins:1839-1909), the Large Date logotype was originally intended for the silver dollar, and the Large Date specimens were struck after the Small Date examples. The Large Date specimens typically have a weaker strike and late die states often have numerous die cracks, not present on this example. The Large Date variety is also considerably scarcer than the Small Date.
