Another set completed: All-Time NFL Rushers

It's been a good week so far for Fabfrank. Finished my All-Time QB set and I just completed my All-Time NFL-Rushers set. Still would like to upgrade the Hornung to PSA 8, but I'll wait till I decent 8 becomes available. This set was fun to put together. All-the names are "who's who" in football. My favorite is the Earl Campbell RC. I just wish they would have made more of his cards.
The best part about putting this set, and all the ALL-Time football sets together, is meeting guys like AllenAlan (Joe), jasp24 (Jason), Alohaet (Ed), footballcardstore (Jeremy) and all the other "Football Band of Brothers" If I left your name out I apologize, but the "Brotherhood" is open to all.image

Another fine collection Frank. Where did you get the PSA 10 Ottis????image

I didnt think anyone would get close to Joe for sometime, but it didn't take you long at all...I'll be happy when I finally get to at least 8.00 GPA..

So what's next on your plate so I know when to get out of your way? lol

The All-Time NFL Rushers set is definitely one of my favorites. I have every card from O.J. on in PSA 9 or 10. I only collect 9's and 10's, so due to the fact that I'm not a millionaire, Brown and Hornung are out (I'd kill for a Brown PSA 9!), I don't like Sayers enough to lay out that kind of cash for a 9, and Csonka - why is he on this list anyway???
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Way to go Frank! The Ottis is nice, it just happened to hit on a poor week for me image. There are more though, they'll show up soon enough. I'm sure you realize that a Hornung 8 would jump your set past mine, but don't count on it being that easy image. What's your next challenge?

  • Jason- It's ironic. I was looking for a PSA 9 Otis for the longest. I win one and than a PSA 10 pops on Ebay 2 days later. I had to go for itimage
As for my other projects, I want to finish my Philly football sets and make some big strides in my SP Authentic sets.

Joe- I could've bought a Hornung 8 many times over. The ones I was offered just didn't meet MY standards of what a PSA 8 should look like. As for passing you or anyone else on the Registry, it's not even on my radar. I do this just for the enjoyment and the camaraderie. There are 1 or 2 possible near term upgrades, but that is still yet to be determinedimage

  • CONGRATS once again Frank. Another great set.
(As for my other projects, I want to finish my Philly football sets and make some big strides in my SP Authentic sets) oh no say its not time to knock heads with Frank.I better get my wallet out ;(

Cool. I was a bit unsure about my Hornung because it has the dreaded "02" serial number, but when I got it in the mail I was floored. It's dripping with gloss and the eye appeal is great. It's one soft corner away from a 9 , or maybe a 10. I'm glad you didn't outbid me on it image.

    Shag,
Your set is very very nice also. 6 of your 17 cards outgrade mine, more than anyone else's set. How about some scans?

Skins- if you're vintage_skinfans on Ebay, than you've had the upper hand on some of the recent Philly football.
I've been steady but deliberate on the Philly football. I won't overpay and if I lose the first card that comes up, I'll wait for the next.

Joe- That's the type of Hornung I've been looking for. Nicely centered with good eye appeal. Did you outbid me on that one? Refresh my memory.

I honestly don't remember Frank. I bought it over a year ago and all I can remember is the seller was from Illinois or Indiana. I think I bought it in December 2002 or January 2003, for around $850.

    FabFrank,

I've got some 1999 SP Authentic Football in PSA 9 and PSA 10 if your interested ... PM or e-mail me. I started the set but decided to concentrate on my '85 Topps Football set for now. I'm about to surpass Chris Renaud for #2 All-Time.

    Congrats on the set!

    Congrats Frank!

I am currently 8th in this set and I only need one card to finish it up. I have the watters but last time i tried to submit, it said someone else still had it registered. Anyway, I need only the Hornung to finish the set. I am, however looking for a 5. I have to many sets Im working on to go high grade. This has always been one of my favorites sets.

  • Dave- The best thing about any of these All-Time sets is that they run from one era to another. I have PSA 5's and 6's in my QB sert and they are great looking cards. In my opinion, with the lower grades there is more variety within a grade to choose from. Some have better centering, weaker corners, better gloss or eye appeal, etc. With lower grades it all comes down to which card appeals to you.
The other factor with these sets is that you can also have some cards grade 9 or 10 in the set. It's all about what makes you happy and what you can afford. Good Luck with your set.

    Frank,

    I sent you an e-mail.

    Thanks,

    Marcus
  • Frank the trouble with us knocking heads on those 67,s is we bid so close to each other.
Yes i have been winning them but by cents your maxing my bid out almost always and it seems we both need the same cards.
I have a great idea Frank start a all time gaurds and tackles set at least until im done with the phillys image
Just kidding best of luck to you.

Why not an All-Time offensive lineman, defensive lineman or linebacker player registry set? I think it would be cool.
  • Frank, tremendous set! You and Joe are running neck and neck on that one and probably will be a while. Just don’t hurt each other too bad. Brothers will fight over things, just no blood please. Thanks for the mention, I consider myself to be a BIG Football Card advocate, and not just a silent one. Football is the place to be in the future, and this is a great core of supporters.

Very nice looking Hornung. I’ve taken lots of chances, or what I thought to be chances on 0 serial numbered cards, and way more times than not have been satisfied.

You mentioned Earl Campbell; I have someone that is going to consign a Campbell 10 Rookie in the next few days. A very tough card, all of the ones I pull have that same ink splotch near his head. (edit: to say not trying to spam, just excited about seeing this rookie in the elusive 10).

<< <i>Why not an All-Time offensive lineman, defensive lineman or linebacker player registry set? >>

Good idea, these types of positions are more popular than people think.

I’d also like to hear from a couple of other Football Brothers, Kid4HOF and RobBobGolf (even if you do collect 74 baseball).

I have also considered submitting an All-Time Defense set. Only reason I haven't is that my list ended up too big when trying to put one together. I did create the All-Time team sets, the Team of the decade sets, and the Super Bowl MVPs set for the Registry. Maybe we could do what we did when putting together the HOF RC set, and that is get a consensus here in the forum before submitting.

I will start a new thread and see if we can put something together. I will then submit it to BJ in excel format.

I think the all-time defensive linemen and linebackers set is a good idea. Defensive greats have been underappreciated compared to the offensive greats.
  • Sixdart- I'll email you back tonight. I can't access my email from work anymoreimage

Jeremy- I interested in seeing that Campbell RC. Let us know when you post it on your site.

Skinsfan- Seems we think alike when it comes to pricing Philly football. I don't mind too much when I lose a card because the next one usually falls into my lap at a lower price. What I need is packcollector to find more cards to submit. You hear that Duncan?image

egads! Did you say a Campbell PSA 10? Is it going on eBay or on your site first?

    Joe
No such details will spoil my plans...
  • Sorry won't be on eBay - only on the site, I have it for 1-4 months on consignment and have little control over pricing.
If I can't sell it, it might be on eBay eventually. However, I have a pretty good record of selling rare high grade stuff. I am pretty confident it will sell. There are only 4, but never had been able to locate one before now.

It's funny with Campbell, everytime I see an Oiler TL card in the 80s I imagine that Campbell should be on it.
It's a shame. Really guys I feel bad, you know I rarely spam, I only brought it up because I am very excited about the card.
Just the word Campbell sets me off right now.

Gotta echo Frank on this one..I welcome the spam so long as it pertains to PSA graded cards that fit on the Set Registry...

A PSA 10 Campbell would DEFINITELY apply. Do you know how much you will be listing it for? Give us a little sneak at the price. I just sold my PSA 8 1935 Ken Strong, so I've got a couple of extra dollars. I think the Campbell 10 is a great investment, and one of my favorite cards as welll...1979 Was the first year I collected cards.image...When I was a whopping 7 years old..Still have everyone of the cards too(although most are not in gradeable condition)..lol

  • PM sent -

Gotta ask (and turning the thread back to the attention of the set) how come neither of you have a 73 Franco 9?
I see Jason took a stab at $300 the other day, what do you think a fair price on that one is?

They have been as high as $750. Jeremy
    Jeremy
  • Thats not really spam Jeremy.

I mean if it was spam you would say something like go to www.TheFootballCardStore.com FOR SOME OF THE BEST HIGH GRADE FOOTBALL ON THE NET. Now that would be spam image.

Jeremy you know where to send that discount coupon for the advertising plug image
  • AlanAllenAlanAllen Posts: 1,530 ✭✭✭
Because I have yet to see a Franco 9 that meets my requirements. Ditto on Campbell, except for one last month that got pulled early. I think around $500 is fair.

  • how come neither of you have a 73 Franco 9?

I saw one recently on Ebay, but I had a death in the family and was out of town, so I couldn't place a bid or a snipe. My price range on that card would be in the $300-$500 range. The problem is that some of the 9's have that diamond cut/tilt. If I'm going to pay PSA 9 $$$ for a card it better be centered.

Jeremy- Email or PM with the price and a scan of that Campbell RC

Same here. I usually bid based on grade+++visual appeal. I try to rate the cards on a .1 scale, ie 8.4, 9.2, etc...Then I bid accordingly. The last few Harris 9's havent been too great, so I won't pay a premium for them either. If I could have got it at $300, I would be fine with it, but the price has to equal my personal grade.

Sure would like to find a nice one though...lol

  • I understand, it's got to have that eye appeal. 73 is a strange year, I do like the design that year, not one of the more popular designs I understand. Joe, Jason & Frank, time is on your side.

Thanks for the plug Art - mighty nice of you indeed ~
I don't know what kind of coupon your looking for, but I've got a 68 Ditka that is very nicely centered.

Frank I will email you that scan and price later today (your PM is off).

I could use that 70 Bob Long also

    Joe,

That was nearly what the last one sold for. When you mentioned your snipe price, I couldn't refuse the offer that I received for the Campbell PSA 9. I nearly tripled my purchase price on the card. It was one corner away (under 10x) from an easy PSA 10. I wished it had gone into the registry though.

    Jeremy,

Are you posting any '85 Topps Football PSA 9/10s on your website?
  • AlanAllenAlanAllen Posts: 1,530 ✭✭✭
No problem bro, I have enough cards on my wantlist that one slipping through my fingers is not going to keep me up nights. There is one card ending tonight that I'd sure as heck better win though...
No such details will spoil my plans...
  • Still no more new 1985 FB, all of the 1985 listed on Second String (meaning 8s and 9s) were just sold as well.
I do have one order in now but it hasn't been logged yet. It's for about 125 1985 FB among other stuff.

And Art, the Bob Long also sold just a few days ago along with most the other 1970 PSA 9s.
Football is has been on recently, but the trend has been up the last 12 months, even with heavy submissions from the usual suspects on eBay and the last $5 special. I have been contact by more and more FB collectors. Even considering we have lost a few here and there, the trend is steeply upward.

I wrote somewhere in another thread about how I was happy to see very little unopened FB in Mastro's latest auction compared to unopened baseball. It's really a good time to be a football card buyer. You really can't lose too bad.
