A remarkable piece-very unique. I'm not sure whether it's a coin or a medal but it would fit nicely into a collection, I'm sure. Absolutely stunning-certainly worth your interest shep.

Here are some terrible pictures of the one I just got...almost 4-5 months to find it....I just took these a couple nights ago in really bad light and just looked at them today.
Not good pictures, but you get the idea--3 parts to the medal (or whatever). The first picture is the front, the second picture is the back. It then opens up to the pregnant lady, whose belly then opens up to show the fetus and the placenta. I realize that perhaps no one else here finds that terribly cool, but I do .
I have been able to find out very little about Kauko Rasanen (the guy I bought the medal from wasn't able to communicate a whole lot). He designed one of the Helsinki Olympic medals, though I couldn't find a picture and I don't know if it was one of the actual atheletic medals or a commemerative. He also has some sculpture work. He does seem very fond of the multiple part medals.
I'd like to learn more than what I could on a google search so if anyone has any pointers on where to find out more about Rasanen I'd be interested.
Cool auction by the way...but I usually don't bid on private auctions, I might for a REALLY expensive item IF I knew the seller...but for this I'm not so sure!
I ended up putting in a low bid, but I was pretty chicken about going high with a new seller and a private auction...besides my computer connection went down last night (or yesterday depending on where you are). Please post it when it gets to you, I'd like to see some more of it, and if you find out more about the guy I'd like to hear it!
It is indeed quite an intriguing medal and I have one myself. Raukanen is one of Finnland's top artists and all of his oeuvre is in high demand (in Europe at least). In spirited bidding for three different medals of his and won only the one Oldshep has linked.
