OT - Digital Camera question

Question to those mighty experts of the DC. I'm in the process of narrowing down a digital camera for the wife's birthday next month. Does anyone use their DC in an outdoors environment taking a considerable amount of outdoor/nature shots and/or caving with a flash and have a recommendation for a model? I'm looking at the HP 945xi at the moment because I want zoom beyond 120mm.

The other question I have is on the mem cards. How many shots can one reasonably expect to have stored per MB?

Thank you!

There are several great cameras out there now and all will do essencially what you want, price being the only consideration. The number of pictures you can take will depend entirerly on the resolution you chose. The Higher the resolution the smaller number of pictures. Most memory card will give you exact figures for the memory involved.

I have an Olympus C5050 and rarely use it outside so I can't help you there. As far as pictures per meg it depends on picture resolution and file type. THIS PAGE has a chart at the bottom that may help you.

Generally, I've found about 3 shots per Meg is a good compromise unless you are wanting to print super hi-res pix for 8x10s or larger. I recently went to a 700+Kb jpegs for my macro shots of coins. I use an 80Mb CF card. Get something with at least a 128Mb card......they're cheap nowadays.

Edited to add: Those 300+Kb shots are at 1200x1600 res. in Normal mode.
