I believe Mastro's last auction topped the $10 million mark, its safe to safe this auction will raise the bar quite a bit...jay

Some of the prices are already astronomical.

After only 2 days of bidding, some of these wax prices are amazing. Over $3 k for the 60/61 Topps hockey display box and pack. $3k for the perfect 1959 Topps pack. Still two more weeks of bidding left.

  • From PC: "insert shill".

To PC: How about "insert shrill" ??

Give it a rest. If you don't like threads on Mastro, then don't read them.

This Mastro auction is breath taking. For collectors of unopened wax, this offering is like having the chance to buy the Mona Lisa or Michelangelo's David statue. It doesn't get any more impressive.

This auction will talked about alot more in the next few weeks.

    if not down-right suffocating.

the auction is breath taking for the wax, Yes. But i think in the end most collectors will end up with nothing unless they go really crazy on the super retail prices and throw out all sense of reason. some of the prices will make no sense whatsoever. my guess is that when all is said and done , a few really deep pocket collectors will end up with just about everthing and the majority of collectors will walk away still dreaming that they can find a box at a local antique dealer because they will never be able to win one in this auctionimage

the other thing that hasn't even been discussed is that since most of these topps packs came out of canada, are the 59's and 63's 3 card packs. I have never opened any of these but seen the designation before on some gai holders and it would seem to make sense since they somhow stuff 36 packs into a 24 ct box that would make the prices even more crazy image

still I will make a few stupid bids and still lose but it will be exciting anyway

I dont understand? Why do you say its a shill? Because the prices are high? Do you have specific knowledge? Or are you just upset because the prices may be higher than you expected. I really wanted the 1969 Tray but not at that price, so shill or not it really doesnt matter to me. I have a price in my head and if it goes over, I guess I dont win it.

I too was interested in the tray but I think the final price will be insane. I'd say $500-600 per pack would be at the high end of what's reasonable.

I think it's safe to say that this auction will shatter all previous records.

gemint , I put an early bid on the tray so i could bid later. not gonna happen , already 600 a pack plus the juice . wow
  • gaspipe26gaspipe26 Posts: 1,614 ✭✭✭
I forget the actual $ amount but my final bid was the one that took it just over $3K. I'm done.

as long as consignors can bid upon their items and we cant see
who is placing bids while prices seem extremely high the possibillity
    of shilling exists.

I put in a whooping $200 bid at the start of the auction. Needless to say, I too am finished bidding on this auction.
  • Unless they have changed their rules, consignors can't bid on their own items. A couple of years ago, I tried to pull up an item that I consigned to them on my bidding screen and I was informed that I was unable to bid on it.

I guess that you could always have a friend buy it back or secretly open another account, but then you would have to pay quite a penalty to get the item back between the buyer's and seller's fees.

I didn't bid on the '59 pack or the 60/61 unopened pack and display box. Even something "common", like the 76/77 Topps Hockey wax box is at retail already ($360). There won't be many bargains here, that's for sure.

I was thinking of registering but my max bid would have been $2500, daydreaming I guess. Some really nice stuff here but as someone said above, it's going to go mostly to the deep pockets collectors.

    1957 Topps BB Ex+-NM
    All Yaz Items 7+
    Various Red Sox
    Did I leave anything out?
  • its amazing seeing those items still exsist (wax) after all these years..just wish someone would drop the winning lottery ticket around the convience store..oh yeah, someone tried that one already

I agree with pack collector. Nice to dream about this stuff, but to me it's a waste of time. I doubt anyone on this board will win anything substantial here....not because we can't afford it, but because we realize that these items are way overpriced. I spent over $20K in the Superior auction and I think I got some great buys. I love unopened wax, but I am not out of my mind [at least the last time I checked I wasn't!].
