What is with SAEs and green PCI slabs???

I stopped by my friendly neighborhood coin dealer today for some supplies and to peruwe the inventory (Dlimb2, PM me! I've got a location where you can search BU "Bald guys" to your hearts content!) and was agast to see a number of SAEs in green label PCI holders that were toned(?) around the periphery, some were gold colored, some were orange colored and some were cranberry colored, but the coloring looked like colored wax had been applied just prior to slabbing!

Positively unnatural, anyone else seen anything like that or know what causes it?

The label in the slab I think. Early ngc slabs without the divider do the same thing.

Russ, yeah they're very similar but the toning on the SAEs I saw today was only a single color and only proceeded to the inside of the lettering (say 3/16 of an inch in from the edge).

Does pcgs bag them or slab them?

I bought a 99 SAE in one of the green label PCI slabs in 99. By last year, it was turning gold and violet towards the rims. It was pure white when I first received it. I put it up on eBay and got a little under $10 for it.

I don't know, Russ. That SAE looks like it was doctored before it got slabbed.
