I don't think so USPS Priority mail is only like $4.00. The Mint is Charging $12.95 on top of the $4.95 for regular shipping for it. So a total of $17.90.
Ok, Mine was just a guess. I didn't know what they were charging for the expedited service. I have never used the expedited shipping. Mine always come in the regular brown box. I have seen items on ebay that describe as "unopened US Mint shipping box" and they are always in a priority mail box.
Expedited shipping gets you your products in 2 to 3 days by a carrier chosen by the mint. I go with the standard and wait the extra 5 to 10 days. But I am cheap
I haven't checked lately, but last year, if your order was over $300, expedited shipping was free. I recall receiving their packages via UPS, and I vaguely recall next day service, too. But, I may be way off track...
For $12.95 you can take cuts in line and get your order filled before the more patient people. You still pay the $4.95 S/H fee on top of the $12.95
I believe the expedited shipping is still done via US Priority Mail (but they say they use a number of different carriers), but your order is filled in front of the others.
Up until last year any order over $100 was upgraded to free expedited shipping - now it's $300
Back in the good old days, when expedited was for $100 orders, I received items via Priority and Fedex. Fedex was not overnight - it was their 2 to 3 day service. And I suspect someone at Fedex had their eye on my package, and hoped I wouldn't claim it within their 2 day window.
Get this, the mint tells me they don't know who will be the shipper until the shipper picks it up. It could be the USPS, could be FEDEX or it could be UPS or it could be someone else. But it will be someone that will not leave it without a signature.
Plus that 2 to 3 days expedited shipping could still be after a 7 to 10 day order processing time.
