A Questions for my fellow board members

I was just wondering how many of you buy raw cards off ebay and send them in to get graded? I am thinking about starting this and i was wondering if any of you do it and if you have any suggestions for me.

thanks

    Yes! Be Careful!
Unless you are buying unopened material to bust open and submit, its a hard road to do well. Keep in mind you cannot pick up creases, wrinkles and other imperfections via a scan, but the graders will. Also few raw lots even show the reverse of the card,
so a card may look great and on the back could be writing or a stain. ..jay
  • if you buy bowman chrome, look at jkeen01 and mr.mem neither of them cherry pick and i've always had great deals w/them...scans haev always been accurate, etc. dslsports is another, but they don't have much raw material. another thing to consider is buying rack packs, vending boxes, etc. bbckid is great/reliable for that.

I would not advise this for vintage cards that you can find on e-bay already holdered.

I have had good luck(ie - several raw T-205s that graded out as PSA 5s) and some bad luck (2 that I have bought have turned out trimmed).

Be careful, but the mantra is if you think it might be trimmed, it probably is.
  • i agree with MURCERFAN, at one point or another, vintage is always available already graded, just wait to find what you want in a desired grade. also, one out of every 5 people will be the type to 'disagree' with grading. so there has to be another reason why the other 4 didn't submit that card (be careful!).

as for modern, i buy lower priced raw stuff occasionally. i recieved a lot of 5 basketball insert sets today from langessports on ebay who advertised them in nm/mt shape. that's a big negative! they are no better than nm, and a few would probably be excellent. not even worth grading. needless to say but i'm pretty upset, especially cuz this is stuff from like 93 to 96 (not hard to find in mint shape), and a few more got damaged from poor packaging. if anybody on this board has that ebay user name, i think i want my money back.

Only for oddball stuff and modern stuff that hasn't seen many examples graded. If it's a mainstream issue with 20,000 cards graded, you have to wonder why the person is selling it raw.

  • I have had pretty good luck buying from Kruk Cards on Ebay and having them graded. I had 1 card come back trimmed and they refunded my money the same day they received my return. They are great.

depends on what type of cards your asking about and the grades your seeking.
    Good for you.
  • By raw, do you guys mean stuff not graded?

  • I've had what I consider good luck with small lots of 1960s and early 1970's football commons. I have focused on small lots and single cards. About 25% have come back at PSA 8 - with a few 9s. Most of the others just miss at PSA 7. I probably added 12 -15 cards to my PSA 8 1961 FB set from ebay raw purchases. I also agree with the comments about oddball stuff. Many of the Archie Manning oddball cards in my Master Set came from ebay.

I would not try buying stars raw, as the question of why they are not graded is legit. But in the case of commons, grading is not yet in the mainstream and many people will sell nice commons without even considering grading

Many get cute with their item descriptions on ebay on raw cards. I learned the hard way. But if you buy a lot, and find the seller reputable regarding their item descriptions, you may find get a few cards to grade. Key is to find a reputable lister.

Newbie - yes. Raw is ungraded.
