Crackout 101

  • What are the odds of this Morgan upgrading?
  • What are the odds of this Morgan downgrading?
  • Would you send this in as a regrade or a new submission?
  • Would you crack it out or send it in the first generation holder?

The image looks like an upgrade candidate.

Oh yeah, if it were mine and I thought it would upgrade, I'd crack it out. Odds are better.

  • Thanks Russ, what would be the best way, regrade or new submission?

PCGS can be really tough on common date S-mints and I think it will 65 again. On a common S-mint, you can't have much in the way of contact marks on the cheek and still get a 66.
  • If it grades MS65 again, then cool, but if it grades less than MS65, I will definitely cry.

Agreed. But, I'm not seeing much in the way of contact marks in the image. Looks like a few areas of frost fade, but otherwise very smooth.

I would like to see a better photo, but based on what I see this is what I would do. Crack it out of the current holder and send it in as a new submission. I see little chance of that coin coming back in a 64 holder and think you have a pretty good shot at a 66 as the cheek looks very clean. DO NOT send PCGS the label from the old slab, by doing so you would be running the risk that they might actually look at it and give the coin a 65 and they have demonstrated to me that they could care less about updating the pops.

You might get a 66 if you're lucky. You keeping it or selling it.?To a discerning buyer I don't feel they would like it in a 66 holder. I know I wouldn't buy it as a 66. I say this only going by the images provided. If the images change I could change my mind.

Looks like it is a shot ms66 to my eyes....

I am not seeing enough distractions to keep this in a five holder....

Are those rim bumps at 2:00 and 10:00?

I cannot tell if the bumps are on the holder or the coin itself.

    They're plastic tabs.

There also appears to be a few spots of some sort on the reverse. I know the coin has been there a long time. But I wonder what they are? Could be from a past dip? Hard to say.

I look at it this way. Sheet price for a 65 is in the ballpark of 108.00.
Sheet price for a 66 is somewhere in the 250-260.00 range. If you're selling it and it makes a 66 you have grading fees, s/h/i fees.

If you leave it in the rattle holder you can say 'First generation holder, upgrade candidate, old holder PQ+++. Let somebody else think they got a deal.image

In that case, crack her, give her a fresh bath, and roll the dice. OK, you don't need to giver her the bath.

I feel a big part of it upgrading will be on the luster. If it has knock down frosty luster it might get a bump.
