Congrads to me..... Image added

Yes, congrads to me for I have just recieved a coin I bought off Ebay in the mail today that had been whizzed.

As a matter of fact I thought I was buying a nice 1972-P T-1 Ike with very few contact marks a for sure high grade coin. However, not only was it whizzed but was whizzed to make appear like a 72P T-1. It so happens that it is really a 72-D because if you turn the coin just right in the light you can see where the D was whizzed off. It also has those classic striations you see a in 72-D coins you know the "lines"
image It was an ebay coin and from the image it looked like a real winner. I didn't pay much for it and really it's kind of good to have for two reasons:
1. I have a "in hand" example of a coin that has been whizzed and tooled.
2. It will serve as a reminder to be more careful when buying coins.

  • I'm sorry this happened to you. Sleazy Ebay sellers suck.

    Been there done that.

I've got a few whizzed coins that show other collectors for the sake of knowing what a whizzed coin looks like.

You have to see it in person. Whizzing is very difficult to see in an ordinary pic, even a high-resolution one.

    We ARE watching you.

Yes Bill that was the one. I took that image you have an blew it up and re-recolored it, sharpened it and looked it over as best I could before I bid. I swear I could not see what I do now that I have the coin in hand. The seller was cwbysemmitt with 100% feedback. I am not really upset, this just teaches me a lesson and I hope the images will help new collectors.

So, thats what a wizzed coin looks like hmmm. Almost looks like they took a scotch bright to it to wear off the mint mark. What a scumbag. I will compliment you on your choice of background color...... 100% image

It looks more like the "D" was filed off and then polished with emery cloth. For whizzing they use one of these:

I just hope that this will show new collectors that care has to be taken when buying coins from ebay. The seller may have not been aware of this and there are many that sell coins on ebay without a clue as to what they sell. Then there are other sellers who are very aware of what they are doing. Always try to bid on coins with good clear images of both sides. I emailed the seller with a link to my web page and this coin image. They may not have been aware of this. If he was then it's my fault for breaking me own rule for buying coins without clear images of both sides.
  • Looks to me like you didn't receive the same coin that's pictured in the auction. There's a couple markers in your blow up that definately don't show up in the auction pic. The short line in front and above of Ikes nose, and the longer line going out in between the chin and lower lip.

I would ask the seller if he sent you the wrong one by mistake.

It is the same coin because the 2x2 it came in is identical to the one in the image. Also my image is 10 times better that the scanned one the seller used.image

MSD61, Thanks for posting the pic and thanks to this forum. I am a very newbie collector and I read alot from this forum and other sources about the hazards from buying over the net. With the exception of the forum members here I will only buy PCGS or NGC slabbed coins off of ebay because I have no clue what these tooled, wizzed, cleaned coins look like. Sunday I bought my first raw coin from the coin show I attended and thanks to FC57coins' tutorials on grading that he put up I felt that I should give buying raw a first time go. Just once for now. I'll be slabbing that baby soon to see how well I actually did. So far you educated 1 newbie on something he didn't know!

I got a response from the seller of this coin. He states that it was pulled from a 1972 mint set personally quote, "they were pulled directly from mint sets personally. No way anything was done to them!" Well, unless I missed something there are no Eisenhower dollars in 1972 mint sets. At first I thought that maybe this seller has made a mistake now I am not so sure.

  • That's a great photo. I can actually see verticle whiz lines as well.
