How much do you spend a month?

My wife thinks that I spend to much each month on coins. She has her money and I have mine. We both spend the same amount out of our "allowance" but she sorta spreads hers around, where mine is a more focused area.

Do most of you have a set budget...or do you treat yourself only when you receive a windfall?

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

  • Just tell your wife that coins are for "INVESTMENT" purpose, like stocks or mutual funds!!!

If the allowance has been established and is stuck to, then that should be that. Seems very equitable to me.
  • Yeah, women seem to have a broader range of what they spend their $$$ on. I'm the same way as you though. I concentrate my spending budget of $200 a month on coins. Sometimes I hoard the cash for one big purchase over a few months time. The wife just doesn't understand the hobby. Luckily I was able to get my budget increased this year. Needless to say I had to fight for it. Victory!!!

I don't have a specific budget, but I will buy a few coins around payday. I don't buy anything that i can't easily afford. Let your wife know that if she doesn't want you spend all that money on coins, that she is more than welcome to chip in.

  • Well, I probably should be spending about $200 a month, but am spending more like $400 - $500 a month on coins I don't really want.

I am selling off the stuff I don't want and turning over a new leaf to only buy coins I REALLY want. No more squandering.

I failed to mention how she spreads it around: Clothes, Shoes, Purses and hair...pretty much in that order

I tried telling her that I also spread it around: Type, Frankies, and SLQ...pretty much in that order

    She didn't buy that though...image

If you both spend the same who of the two of you has retained the most value from your spending?

It's not really "spent" if you have something tangible to show for it, is it?

  • I've been allocating around $150 per month to coins. I generally spend $100 and put $50 towards a big purchase.

Just keep reminding her that the money you use comes from the allowance and nowhere else. Don't mention the things that she buys or it will get ya into trouble.image

  • I'm cut off until we pay for farm, hopefully this year . . . but I still sneak a few in. image
  • No set budget -- some months I'll go without buying any coins, others I'll end up buying a few. I really went overboard in the last few weeks, so I'm limiting myself at the time being to focusing on my core sets: Liberty Nickels, Indian Quarter Eagles, and a Gold Type Set. I only have a few coins left in each set, so it will probably force me to go a little while without buying anything.

I really don't know. It is different every month. I think the following months not more than $10, because I'm saving for a pattern......+some cool wheats.

I still have a long way to go........I'm only 15...

I spend as little as I can (or at least as little as I can that my wife can find out about)! What I can say is that I've been selling more than I've been buying (measured in $$$) so my wife doesn't complain! LoL

The operative question I posed to the wife is; "How much will your shoes be worth in 20 years?"

Hey babe, nice EF40 red pumps.....those are 1998 vintage, right? image
