I have to admit i have watched you building this set for a couple of years now and its been fun. From your early beginnings saying that you would have the finest 72 set that even Frank Bakka would lust after and that Franks set was "riddled with 8's to last year when you said that you most wanted to meet Frank " the person you are going to dethrone". Im just curious with Frank on the verge of breaking the 9.00 barrier with no slowing down in sight . Do you ever think you can catch him ? and what alot of people are expecting your going to hit a brick wall and have to add some 8's ? are you going to ever add an 8 to your set
Greg
Great questions! I have also watched this for the past few years...and have always found it interesting.
I sure wouldn't bet against FB...he knows this set inside and out...and has a HUGE headstart in the low-pops.
With all due respect to EO, go FB, go FB, go FB
edited to say: in regards to EO catching FB, both have great sets and are both nice guys and it will be interesting to see how it plays out.
I never do anything half-assed, so the answer is hells no, I aint stickin any 8s in there!

I was even able to help EO out a few weeks ago.
A dealer posted a 72 PSA 9 Steve Kline on eBay with a ridiculously low But It Now price. Since I knew that Eric needed it - I stabbed the BIN button and shot him an email before somebody else nailed it.
There are still about 8 cards in the 72 set that don't have a PSA 9 yet - including the Schaal IA, the Grote and the Cleon Jones In Action. If 9's do eventually pop up on eBay - I'm sure that my bids won't be even close!!!!
Also - don't sell PSA 8's short. I've got some 8's in my set that would have been 9's had the grader been laid the night before. The only thing that isn't mint about them is the number on the plastic holder. An 8 can be a downright gorgeous card - regardless of the grade assigned to it.
Let me say - Continued good luck!
Edited to give PSA 8's their props!

Thanks for replying
FB & EO
Congrats to both of you for building some amazing 72 sets . And agree with Frank 100% there are lots of 8's out there that are mint but the flip doesnt say so.
Keep up the good work
Looks like Dave Read isn't stepping down quietly!!!!
He has added a number of PSA 9's into his 72 set and jumped back into 3rd place!!! He's got a heck of a lot of work on his hands if he wants to hold on to it but for now, he's making it interesting!!!

i would also keep an eye on mike castaldi, brad horton, and the corpis collection who are all within striking distance of the top 5.
i'm having almost as much fun watching the leaders as i am building the set.
I've got most of my 69 set sold off and safely deposited into my daughter's 529 plan, so it's on to bigger and better things. Since I'm not sure what those bigger and better things are, I figured I'd take advantage of the current pricing environment on 72 9's and update a couple (of hundred). I remember being outbid 2 yrs ago on a Billy Williams IA PSA 9, two weeks in a row, at around $200 both times. So it seemed appropriate to jump back in right where I left off on the 72's; picking up a Williams IA for $67. No grandious plans here for making a run at a 9.00 GPA, just looking to upgrade where the price is right.

You are sooo right. Also, it'll take Dave 3 to 5 PSA 9's being added to his set to increase his Set Rating by .01. When Eric adds one PSA 9 to fill a hole - his set rating will jump .01 or better.
Still and all - fun to watch!

My girlfiend told me she would buy me a scanner for my birthday. That being the case, you might be in luck.
I have a scanner now but it seems to focus on the holder and not on the card. No matter what I do, the plastic comes out "crispy", and the card doesn't look very good.
Do any of you guys have recommendations on scanners that take great pictures of cards in holders?
Frank

I'm still #5 in the 1972 registry, but doubt I'll be there a year from now...
