Altered Surface?

I got one of my Morgans back BB'ed for this. What do I need to look for in the future to not end up with another Altered Surface coin?

Hi Ken,

Some of the more common "altered surfaces" include,

putty on the face

thumbing...i.e. nose grease on the face

harshly rubbed or burnised surfaces

It should be pretty obvious under magnification.
