Well, the United States was once ruled by England.

There is also Bechuanaland (Botswana), Swaziland, Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), Malawi (Nyasaland), Northern Rhodesia (Zambia), The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Gold Coast (Ghana), Kenya, a portion of Somalia, Tanganyika/Zanzibar (Tanzania), Uganda, Egypt, Anglo-Egyptian Sudan (Sudan), British India (India/Pakistan/Bangladesh), Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Burma, Singapore, Trucial States (United Arab Emirates), Aden (Yemen), British Honduras (Belize), Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and the Falkland Islands and I am sure I missed some others as well.

One more thing to consider izzy most if not all of the countries that still put the Queens head on their coins have or are in the process of updating the Queens portrait making a whole new generation of coins.

American colonies. The only coins issued by the crown for a specific colony were for Virginia.

It used to be said that the sun never sets on the British Empire. We are talking about colonialism and impreialism at it's finest.

    Essequibo and Demerrary.

And don't forget obvious little close ones like Lundy, Alderney etc. And there's Gibraltar. (I didn't read the lists so if someone posted them then - oh well)

    How about Malta??
  • LloydLloyd Posts: 887
Definitely MALTA. You can collect ONE coin. Good one too, namely the British 1/3rd Farthing.

You can get terrific coins from the late 1700's / early 1800's from Ceylon and Essequibo and Barbados and the Bahamas and it just goes on and on. And they're cheap as chips in Fine and VF.

I sell loads of this stuff on Ebay. Just this minute sold a Belize 1974 Proof 5c - we still own that I believe. Great coin - a little modern but hell.

    Brilliant idea for collecting.

Yes. In all seriousness, I think the British Empire was a greater feat than even the Roman Empire. The funny thing is, even though most of the former colonies claimed to hate British rule, most of them are far poorer countries today without it. United States excepted of course. image

I may have missed it but I didn't see Cyprus listed.

Someone said Atlantic etc... so Falklands, Ascension, St Helena. Man we could go on all night.

I assume we've mentioned some basics: eg. Canada and Southern Rhodesia.

    Turks & Caicos Islands

Scotland, Ireland, Gibraltar, Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey

You can break Canada into Upper and Lower Canada, The Province of Canada, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, New Brunswick and British Columbia (expensive)

You could maybe get specific by collecting British company coins, from India, Canada and others.

    Far-called, our navies melt away;
On dune and headland sinks the fire:
Lo, all our pomp of yesterday

    Neat idea for a collection!

As for the empires, while the British Empire absolutely dwarfs any other empire created on this planet, you have to give credit to the Romans for doing it w/o any real means of communicating besides human runners (in most cases). Also, as a percentage of the 'known' world, the Romans had a higher percentage than the British...

The Ionian islands were an independent state under British mandate between 1807 and 1864,
after which they were united with Greece.I guess you could call them a British protectorate ,
but in reality it was an important military base for the British and a favourite place for holidays today.

Legend reads: IONIKON KRATOS = IONIAN STATE

Anyway you look at it, these are wonderful coins to collect. image

If you're going to include Lundy, you might as well add Sealand too. image
