1956 Topps Set

Thinking about making this one my next conquest. I like the concept of a finite set instead of the NRMS I am currently pursuing, which will never be finshed. I love the horizontal format. Any advice as to how I can give Marshall Fogel a run for his money besides winning the lottery???

Rob a bank......and you may have to rob two or three of them to compete with Mr. Fogel.imageimage

Why marry his daughter and wait? Move to Massachusetts and marry Marshall.

go for 6's and 7's....no way you want to do this set in 8's...that demands at least 50 a card and many times up to 80-100 range just for commons.....ive got 4 more cards i need for this set..i started last year...its very affordable in 6-7 and one of the best looking sets of all time. every vintage collector should own a 56....its just vintage through and through. Its also one of the few sets that shows an action shot AND a head shot and still has that painted/old picture feel to it.

This is such a great looking set that I think gets overshadowed by the 57 set. If you decide to go for the set, post some scans on your registry so we can all enjoy them.
    Good Luck,

  • I believe that Jim Scope has his #5 set for auction with Mastro. You could start with that, and then you only have to upgrade a little over a third to PSA 9 to pass Fogel!! Piece of cake.

What do people thing Jim's set will go for?

Jim has a really high grade set with most cards being very high end for their grades. If you have the capital, his would be a really awesome start to catching Fogle.I wish that I had the money as I would jump on this set with both feet.I am trying to build this set in 8 or better and presently 25 % complete.I will probably take another year to finish it and have between 25-35 grand in the set.I think that Jim was trying to get 38 grand out of his set when he offered it on the B/S/T forum. It would not surprise me to see this set go for around 50 grand. He and I were working on a deal when he decided to consign the whole set to Mastros. To say that I was disappointed in not acquiring about a 1/3 more cards in the high grade that his are is an understatement.Jim has an enormous amount of knowledge about this set and has really put together a really top notch set.

    Jim,

If you are reading this, good luck with your set.I know how hard it is to sell but you will do well.

I personally do not collect the set for any other reason then the cards...so i collect well centered 1956/1957 psa 6 and 7's....the harder the common the more likely you are to have to collect 7's cause the harder commons are not seen as much in 6's. A 6 is often referred to as a NM-MT on ebay raw...it may even be better....so if you think a 6 is a low grade card think again. I have seen many 6's look like 8's and i still dont know why they got the grade they did. At any rate, if you going to collect the cards forthe CARDS....my advise is to go with centered 6's and 7's. If your looking to invest alot in the set....then sit on it for quite a few years all the while waiting for the right time to sell i say go with 8's....but youd be much better off just purchasing HOF'ers from the golden era instead of wasting your time with commons. I truly believe that in order to collect a set you have to love the hobby....not be in it for the $$ aspect......but thats just my 2 cents....i know i woulnt be able to collect a set of soccer cards or anything cause i dont love the sport and so forth...hope that makes sense to you...and maybe me later

ps- i have a question... 2 weeks ago i bought a randy jackson 1956 topps card for 20 bucks raw on ebay...i hadnt seen one on in a while and i got impatient and put a bid on it for 20 hoping someone would want it for 21...but that didnt happen. So i pay the lady and she sends the card....it was advertised as NM-MT and WHAM.....its 4-5 at best...with creased corners and the like. I email her saying "id like to use it for my raw set i do someday that is a 4-5 set...but this is not nm-mt to mt as advertised...id like you to refund 8 dollars of my 23 i paid." She had previously left POSITIVE feeback for me before i got the card...i expected a return email stating SOMETHING....but she has YET to email me back. I feel a bit upset about that....would it be wrong of me to give them negative feedback in an effort to warn others about there overgrading of conditio....the real reason there lack of followup to make the situation right?? they did have no negatives and 1 neutral on there 300 plus feeback rating....

    loth;

If she won't respond to email, what choice does she leave you? It's your responsibility to warn others, and hopefully get her to be more discerning in card grading. You owe to the next guy!

    Good luck with your choice!

I agree..i spelled it out in a large email saying i was not satisfied and then even went into how cards are graded like with corners...and that a card with paper loss at the corner is NOT nm-mt to mint......she did not respond.....my only beef is i feel cheap cause i got pos feedback out of the thing and im just waiting to see what she does...looks like she wont be doing anything...we all know a neg feedback is far more destructive then losing 8 dollars...i cant believe that person wouldnt respond and make me a happy customer...honestly the condition of the card is 4-5..not 8-9....i knew it wasnt a 8 or 9..i was hoping 6-7....but 4-5 is unacceptable

NOTE TO SELF AND 56 COLLECTORS...BUY ONLY RAW WITH PEOPLE YOU TRUST AND NO QUESTION MONEY BACK GUARANTEES!!!

    Loth,

I would let her know that negative feedback is forthcoming due to her gross overgrading.I would then let her know again that you would be happy with a partial refund and that would resolve your anxieties.Although on the surface this might seem like blackmail, you are being more than fair with this situation.I would probably request a full refund and send the card back.Hopefully,She will come to her senses. At least you received the proper feedback and your feedback did not get held hostage on this deal. That happens way too often and then you get retaliatory feedback if you leave what amounts to the proper feedback for the present situation.Good Luck.

I agree with Vic. Give the seller a chance to respond, even if it takes a few more emails. I've done this in the past and eventually resolved a problem that I thought would result in negative feedback (for both of us). You have at least 3 months to leave the negative. If after a month or so, 3 or 4 emails, and no response, then leave the negative feedback.

Loth u got pos feedback because you deserved it! She deserves a neutral or negative AFTER you have exhausted a few emails to her.
    Good for you.

Vic, thanks for the kind words. I just got back from Vegas where I am house-hunting (can't wait to get out of NJ).

I hope you are correct about the final price. Between tuition payments and the aforementioned move, I will need every penny.

I was very pleased to see how the key cards were pictured in the set. The only problem is that the catalogue is very difficult to follow. As far as 1956 sets, there are about 10 raw and partially graded complete sets and some partial sets and PSA 9 lots, but they are all over the place.

Lothar, I have been down that road. Just chalk it up to learning experience. I found about 3 or 4 sellers of high-end raw whose ebay ID's I have bookmarked. Once you buy raw and it grades 8 or better, you have a source for life.
