Die variety for the 1915 Pan-Pac dollar?

I was comparing a 1915S Gold Dollar from the Santa Clara sale to one I just had graded by PCGS.
I noticed the S is in a slightly different place. What do you think?

At that time (and actually up until 1990) mintmarks were punched into each individual die for all non-proof coinage. Since your beautiful dollar falls in that category, it would be one on which mintmarks were hand punched into the dies. You don't have a variety, you have proof there was more than one die involved in their manufacture.

He has established that there are at least two die varieties for this issue (If it hadn't already been established.)

The "S" looks a lot bigger on the top coin.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

I checked the one I have and it is your top one. The S is very close to the O in Dollar.

Mine is the top one but the bottom of the "D" on mine doesn't have that crease in it, is that a hit on yours?

Is your second one slabbed? They have been counterfeited.

  • Mine is the bottom of the two photos. I just got it back today from PCGS and it got a MS66!
I was thinking with a coin with only 15,000 mintage would only use one die, but I guess not.
    Thanks, John
