1986 Topps Mike Schmidt - Congratulation Winner(s)

Congratulations CreeperKat - you win two Schmidt 8s - PM me your address!

JohnG - you also got it right - send me your address, and I'll send you a consolation Schmidt 8 for being second to get it.

Sorry, all, I have to run here - I'll try and be back on Monday evening with some great thoughts and analysis. Surprised how many got the 10 right - but even more surprised how many gave a 10 to the 8. Of course, scans make it harder.

The 10, I think - has a pretty soft cut on the top, and it almost seems like a teensy-weensy bit of extra paper on the top left corner. But I think that most of these are overall graded very very well (and I don't necessarily think the 10 is overgraded, either). I'll try and post thoughts as to why I think some of the 9s got their grade (usually dots...), and what's wrong with the 8, etc.

Cheers-
Marc

I honestly can not tell the difference between the 9's and the 10.

    CHEERS!!
  • I gave the middle top card the 10 grade. Got the 8 right though. Compare the top edge of the actual 10 to the top edge of the top middle card. It's no comparison. Just goes to show, on any given day.....

I feel good that I spotted the 10 easily! It had the best color and by far the best centering... that 8 tripped me up... from the scan, it doesn't look too bad... who knows?

I was not able to participate as I could not see the scans prior. For some reason I can now, and I believe that 8 is definitely bottom heavy and deserving of the grade. The 10 is pretty nicely centered and as that is my #1 priority, I believe this sized up pretty accurately. For me I did a simlar thing with the Yount card from this set. I had about 300 and chose what I thought were the best 3. On a submission that did overall pretty well all 3 were 8s. I sent in the "second best 3" on the next submission that generally speaking did not do as well and all 3 received 9s. This is an interesting hobby we partake in.

The only thing I can see is that the first submission including a Tiffany Yount that was perfect and justly reeived a 10. It was so perfect it could have deminished the appearance of the others. Possibly something to think about when sending in cards is to not include the Tiffany version.

Marc, PM sent. Thanks again for a great contest. I'll see if I can do something similar when I get my highspeed connection back.
Looking for Los Angeles/California/Anaheim Angels in PSA 8 or better
  • Marc, Thank you for having the contest! It is a mystery to me what the PSA graders are looking for when they grade one card an 8, and a seemingly identical card a 9. Maybe if I can ever figure that out, I will know what cards to send in. Thanks again! John

  • I got the 10 right. To me the registry and focus is by far the best on the 10. I think the graders give more weight to that and color than we realize. In the 60's, cards with perfect register have an almost 3-D effect and jump right out at you.

Also look at the color background in the dugout. No comparison between the 8 and the 10. The 10 wins hands down.
