Just curious about the story behind it. Did a word search for it first here and only one thread 2 years ago just showing them. Thanks for any information you can share
The only thing I remember is that some person had kept thousands of rolls of war nickels because they didn't trust the bank for their money. They kept them in a barrel or something. When they died their children couldn't sell off the stuff fast enough. I know a lot of them went to NGC. Here is one and even this picture doesn't do it justice.
I haven't read anything about these but have a real interest in them. Is there a link to a story somewhere? What do you all think they are worth in various grades?
I talked with a dealer who helped the purchaser sell them. Originally they were all bought up by one guy who didn't want to sell them, I guess they were too modern or something.
Apparently there was a large batch of coins stored in different ways. Many were no good. There were some Morgans and other stuff, but mostly War Nickels. I never did find out much about them. I don't even know what state they originated in.
The one below is in an NGC 64* holder. I've seen them priced from $250-$450.

I've noticed that many have a similar sort of odd pattern as shown on the reverse
of this example.
