Steve: CONGRATULATIONS on your latest pursuits!! I personally love these collections. How scarce are the platinum coins? Well, if you take the combined total mintages for every single year of MS platinum $25 coins in your set, the combined total mintage of all the coins is but a fraction of say a "rare" svdb Lincoln cent mintage. Many of these platinum coins have mintages around, or under, 10,000 coins! Every platinum Eagle from 1997 to dateever produced by the mint in every single denomination COMBINED is probably lower than many mintages of many truly "rare" coins as well. One can examine mintage information on these coins at pages 335-342 of the Redbook (2003 edition). image

  • Congrats Steve.

Did you have to drop that 70.00 GPA right on top of me in the gold eagles, though? imageimage

    Sorry Don...
Do check the pops/mintages. Little personal research needed to see why I have made a "statement". Join the club. This is like the "frontier" days of the Jeffs, Roosies, Frankies, and Wash Qtrs. In other words: FUN.
Thanks for the confirmation, Mitch. I like these puppies. image

Nice collection Steve. I like too, they are some pretty coins. I like them much better than the coins that we have in circulation. What got you interested in them? Was it the beauty or investment? Nice..

I like the plat. coins themselves. The different eagle reverses are really neat!
Their potential is very good, in my opinion. image

Congrats Steve. I love those coins and the 1/4 ounce size is not too bad on the pocket book. I thought you liked the different reverses? MS reverses are all the same. So why the MS instead of the proofs?

P.S. I can't believe no one has images in any of the Proof Platinum sets.

  • Bill,
I had that same question for Steve. I guess it was his clue to things to come! image
I bought the new Red Book at the show, and on page 340 there are pictures of the 5 "Vistas of Liberty" reverses plus the original which the ms coins carry. I just got my 2003 coin and it's a different reverse still. I wonder if the mint will continue to change the reverses every year on these proofs. image
They are some of the prettiest coins the mint has produced, IMO.
I pointed out the only U.S. coin to have an alligator on it to a few at the show.

I will put the pics on my "to do" list. image

I just got to stop buying darkside stuff long enough to grab some of the 1/4 proofs.

I will be posting a very scarce 1999 Platinum 1/4 oz PCGS-PR70DCAM on ebay tonight with an opening bid of $1 and NR. The mintage on the coin is a scant 13,524 specimens. image

What if the Feds recall all platinum for the strategic protection effort of 2005? It was once discussed in declassified Congressional papers of 1989.

Naturally the Pentagon waits for the US Mint to sell off the strategic supply first!!
