The Silver Proof Quarters? What the heck?

I read on the US Mint site that the Quarters will be avaliable 4/5/04 w/o mention of the rest of the set?!?!?
I thought the Set Subscriptions would be filled first. Is this usual anyone?

I think the quarters were issued first in past years also.

WASHINGTON – United States Mint Director Henrietta Holsman Fore today announced that, for the first time, the United States Mint is offering collectors a five-coin set featuring only the 2004-dated commemorative quarter-dollar coins in lustrous coin silver (90 percent silver), beginning at noon (Eastern Time) on April 5, 2004.

“It was your enthusiasm that made the 50 State Quarters Program coins the most popular coin program in American history,” said Director Fore in her letter to collectors that accompanies the new set, “and it was your suggestion that we create this proof set. It is extraordinarily beautiful in silver.”

Priced at $23.95, the United States Mint 50 State Quarters Silver Proof Set includes all five new quarters issued in 2004 in the 50 State Quarters Program – Michigan “Great Lakes State,” Florida “Gateway to Discovery,” Texas “The Lone Star State,” Iowa “Foundation in Education,” and Wisconsin “Forward.”

The mint must have decided that since most people cut up the set for the quarters anyway, to gove people just the quarters and possibly increase total sales. This move will probably make the 2004 Silver quarters more numerous than any of the previous years. Also, I think that this is the earliest that any state quarter year set will be available to the public. The Florida quarter (second for the year) has hardly been released yet.

As far as the other half of the proof set not being released yet, the mint probably hasn't minted any of the second design for the Lewis and Clark nickel for the year, at this point.
  • This could be a result of increased pricing on the silver proof sets. The CW that I got today, indicated that Silver sets were going up to $37.95 for 2004, mostly due to bullion costs. Everything else issued by the mint is going up, also.
