Vammers, take a look (PDQ)

Completely (perhaps) Broken R in TRUST (TIUST) on a 1878-S, VAM?

Or am I just seeing things again image

    Yep, your seeing things....

    Your seeing a VAM 2 R Broken R.

I don't know if I'm describing the VAM number correctly, I'm new to VAM's and I could use some help with how the VAMs are properly identified.

But on page 165 of my book is a pic just like the one you show

  • I was thinking VAM-6, but those are only on 1879-S Reverse of 1878, right?

I'd check for a Long Nock (middle arrow shaft juts out from the others) on that 1878-S.
Just a suggestion. If so, you've got a big winner.

There's a b2 reverse hub with a broken r, so there are many flat breast eagle reverses with the broken r, they're all from the same hub. So the broken r is common in 1878 (reverse of 1878), 1878-s and 1879-s reverse of 1878 Morgans.

There are some where the die gets basin'ed and the relief of the devices are much reduced compared to other dies, and the partially broken r becomes a "TIUST" variety. (picture number 7) You'd find these on 1879s rev 78 VAM 6, VAM 46 and 1878-s VAM 19, 74. etc.
