What causes this toning pattern ?

JRoccoJRocco Posts: 14,277 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have several nice toned Lincoln's that show this same obverse toning pattern. Is this a common pattern for toning? The reverse shows incredible iridescent green toning also. Any opinions?

My guess, an envelope or paper wrapper of some kind.

Is it me or does the toning pattern around the devices look like the infamous 1963 PR-70 Lincoln that PCGS pulled from the market?

I have had these stored since maybe the late 60's in white coin envelopes. I have maybe 2 dozen toned in a similar way. I am going thru another storage box tonight that I haven't looked at in a long time and I am curious to see if any others are toned similarly. I have had these coins stored since long before toning became a craze, so I really don't think these were AT'd before I started standing watch over them.

    The envelopes absolutely caused it.

Maybe the envelope itself was able to contact the fields in the larger open areas and not contact it near the LIBERTY for example. That might explain it, thanks nwcs.

Jrocco - Be sure to check the 1935 cents in and around TRUST and the date for a DDO, and check the reverse for extra thickness in the wheats and the motto. This would be the sign for a class 6 distended hub doubled die.

Its like an addiction C.D. Some people relax with a good book, I relax with a roll of Lincolns and a loop. I am on the 35 as we speak.
