A trip down memory lane ...

I was going through some old eBay files, and came across some pretty suprising auction results from the summer of 2001 that I thought others would find interesting. Draw your own conclusions about trends and implications - all I'll say is that I'm glad I've been able to re-purchase some of these cards for a fraction of what I sold them for 3 years ago image.

  • i think this is how Roger Rumsey (4_sharp_corners) made a killing on ebay a few years back- grading cards that have very low pops, mainly because of a lack of submissions. my favorite was when he got $40 something for an 84 Topps Guidry PSA 9

Solomon made a ton of money that way, too.

Remember that grading fees were much higher back then.

I probably was high on some of those Schmidts....
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • If I remember correctly, back then there were no "bulk" invoice rates - it was all based on how quickly you wanted your cards graded. I generally did the 45-day service, which I think was $8/card. No wonder we all get excited when $5 specials are announced image.

Unopened wax was also a lot cheaper back then too (for certain years). I probably paid around $150 a box for '80 Topps baseball, and around the same for '79 Topps football (made out great with those too since no one was grading them back then). In the end though, it probably didn't matter, because I was turning around and spending any profit on "low pop" 80s Rose cards I could get a lot cheaper now too ...
