If I wanted a really well-struck commemorative half...

...which ones would you recommend that I look at?

Which ones typically come weakly struck?

Dan, I'd recommend that you consider the following issues if you are looking for a particularly well struck example:

Antietam; California; Huguenot; Lincoln; Norfolk; Oregon; York. This list is based on a very quick refresher look in the red book, as well as my memory/experience in handling lots of commems.

Please note, the above list is subjective in nature - there are plenty of good strikes to be found among many other issues, as well, but, some are typically better made and/or come with better design detail than others, as a general rule.

I think the Vermont Commemorative has very nice high relief and is usually struck very well.
The Sesquicentenial is usually very poorly struck and any grade above MS63 is tough.
