1913 Type 1 Buffalo......toned...

Have you ever seen this type of toning? A friend of mine wanted to show me some old coins he had after watching me dig around on the internet one morning. He went out to his truck and pulled a crown royal bag from under his seat. This buffalo was one of the coins in his bag. The look on his face made it obvious to me it didn't look this way when he put it there. I thought it was neat and managed to trade him an Eisenhower dollar for it.
What do you think on grade? It is definately circulated but looks better than my scan. I didn't have any way to photograph it.

I never met a coin that wouldn't fit in my collection.....

Whatever else was in the bag, either with the coins, or sometime previously left a residue. That's my bet.

Gotta go with the residue theory here. The felt shouldn't impart that heavy toning. Did your friend use that Crown Royal bag to store other things besides coins? (Not speaking from experience of course.)

It also had a 1878 Quarter in the bag. I managed to get that later. It's in F - VF shape but looks like it has been cleaned. I gave him 2 well worn 22 peace dollars for it.
You could just tell when he opened the bag that he was truly supprised by the toning on them. Otherwise I wouldn't have thought a crown bag could do this.
I am now running a test under the seat of my truck.
