what the hobby is really all about

Of late there has been just so many neg threads on these boards it has gotton to the point i dont even want to read them all. I respect anyones choice to collect what they want and from whatever grading company they want.Or a raw set in any grade. But really this post has nothing to do with psa good or bad. In A POST JUST TODAY Randall finished his 55 bowman set. In his post he points out that sonegate had got him started for the most part on the set. well a few post later the same stonegate comes on and gives his congrats and offers to send a 55 wrapper is a last touch to randall great set. My point is this is the kind of stuff i want to read about not who NOT HAPPY AND WHY. Guys it just a hobby not worth getting angry over whatever choices any grading company makes bottom line is its there company to do as the wish with we as the collectors have the same choice to use them or not. Back to kevin offering Randall a wrapper great stuff it is guys like stonegate that make this hobby what it is. There are way to many to mention or thank for the insight or gestures they have made like kevins to randall or jay sending me a redskins comm ticket with a ebay order. Just remember why you started collecting cards to begain with.PSA awards for sets are fun to get but i would rather see a award to guys that MAKE THE HOBBY FUN. It would be a very tough choice but if i was to pick the winner the above mention stonegate would get my vote. Maybe we could hear so postive stories about who would be your choice and why. PLEASE THATS MAKE THESE BOARDS FUN TO READ AGAIN . and i could borrow a phrase . CHEERS

Hopefully all the negative talk on the boards is just due to everyone waiting for the baseball season to start again so we can have something else to complain about! (being a diehard Pads fan, you can tell that I have lots to complain about!!)

- Slowly (Very Slowly) Working On A 1952 Topps Raw Set (Lower Grade)
Okay...on a lighter note. I've never seen so much attention to Topps Venezuelans as I have in the last year. Yesterday a PSA 5 Yaz rookie sold for $987 to some chump (okay, it was me.) But other recent Venezuelan listings - 1959 Mantle PSA 2, 1964 Kaline PSA 8, 1962 Musial PSA 6, 1968 Clemente PSA 5 - also got some good bidding action. Wait until the 1968 Ryan goes for sale, especially since '68s are harder to come by than other Venezuelan years.
If anyone knows how these cards were distributed - wax packs, cellos, etc. , I'd love to know. Have contacted Mark Murphy and other pack specialists, but we're all in the dark.
Thanks for the original post.
I agree. I too have fired a few barbs and negative posts.
Completeing the 55's and remembering folsk like Kevin and others has also reminded me that it was much
more fun when it was about collecting and chasing cards.
Some of these problem issues are valid and their points legit, but I have decided to do more
listening and less judgeing.
Loves me some shiny!
everyone looked at it so weird..like "what the .."
that little inside joke from the boards just made my day.

By mistake, I sent a pack to someone that I thought was on the boards, and he's not. He Emailed me about, musta thought I was insane, hey! he might be right at that! Anyway, its always been a pleasure buying/selling/trading off of you, as we've done all 3 together, and hopefully we can keep it up in the future...jay

I'm a golf instructor living with my second wife and her two boys age 13 and 16. I tried to get on the Tour about twenty-five years ago and developed the yips. Typical story. Soon after I fell deep into a vodka bottle (Among other things), got tossed by my high school sweetheart (Wife #1) and ended up doing the Tuscon Twelve Step. Been clean for 10 years, but I still go to my meetings because a dumpster is not a home.
I collect old golf clubs, but, recently, I had a client ask if I wanted to trade lessons for vintage baseball cards. He's a dealer with a small store. I thought he was kidding, but I bought some price guides at a magazine stand and thought it might be okay. My 13 year old step-son is really into it. We are currently trying to build one set - The 1954 Dan Dee set. The dealer says this is a good investment and my favorite players are Duke Snider and Gil Hodges. I have about fifteen cards (Most are in PSA holders). The cards came that way and that's how I was introduced to PSA.
To answer the question, I collect to have a hobby to share with my step-son and to bring back a few memories from the old days.
If I sound like an idiot or I'm just rambling, forgive me because I'm nervous.
Best,
Scumbi
By the way, Dan Dee is a great set, what grades are your cards in? They are tough to obtain in any grade...jay

Welcome Scumbi!
1954 Dan Dee's? Quite a set for an introduction into sports cards. Good luck!
The boards have been a little rough lately. This seems to be the venting board for some folks, and all the good things about this hobby have been getting pushed to the bottom. There are many wonderful people on these boards and in the hobby, so here's to them, and let's keep the hobby rolling in a positive direction.
Currently collecting.....your guess is as good as mine.
Maybe we can all emit positive vibrations for the month of April.
Anyone who tries to go Neg during April will be ignored.
Worth a shot!
Loves me some shiny!
Is this hobby really all dollars and cents?
I think NOT!
Great post!!!!
Thanks,
Glen
Skinsfan,
I need spaces in posts. Chuckleheads like me tend to totally miss some stuff.
Here is my story......
At the National last year, I was excited for the registry luncheon, so I could meet some of the people on the board and put some of the proverbial "names with faces". Many people on the boards already knew each from past Nationals, registry dinners, etc. Anyway, I'm hovering around the PSA area, looking kinda lost as I try to sneak a listen to see if I hear a familiar name or topic, so I can introduce myself. I didn't want to just randomly walk up to someone, and have them think I was from outerspace.
As I'm standing there, around the corner comes a human billboard. I get up closer to see who it may be, and it turns out to be Ray Boehm (raybshotz). I know this because he has his name plastered all over his body! I introduced myself to Ray and we began talking. Having someone to cling to now, we made our way over to the PSA table, and I met BJ and Frank Evanov (mantlefan).
The next day I brought my wife and 8-month old son to the show, because my wife wanted to see what the "big deal" was about this particular show. As we were touring around the show, we came to the PSA table, and there was Ray again. He stopped talking to the group he was in, and came over to say hi, and showed a true interest to my wife and child, as my wife and I talked about our family and he talked about his daughter.
It was the best part of the National for me, and he may not remember it, or have thought much of it, but it was very significant to me, and will not be forgotten. Thank you Ray for allowing my two worlds to meet is such a great way.

PS - Sorry to poke fun at you Art, .... but that's what this hobby is all about to me!
As I am now within 3 cards of finishing my Ryan Basic Set, I am starting to quiver and salivate simultaneously! I enjoy reading how others are coping with near-completion. I just hope I don't get so desperate when I get that last card that I pay 100X SMR and have to get a second job to pay for it. Yikes!
Welcome aboard Scumbi! Nice icon! Do we want to know why your frat name was Scumbi? Should we be happy that this is not a scratch'n'sniff board? Just kidding! Hope to see you post often.
<< <i>JAY how come i never get any cool aid >>
ART, its the Redskins thing! Even though I like Gibbs, can't stand your owner. So perhaps if you were to convert to the "Big Blue Wrecking Crew" and become a GIANTS fan, I'll be happy to send you Kool-Aid and even a pitcher to mix it in....tempting!!! ...jay

I'm with Carew4Me...Next guy with a NEG post, has to sit in the corner for an hour......

CHEERS!!
Welcome! '54 Dan Dee, eh? Killer, killer set. Plus, any set that was
distributed in bags of potato chips is automatically cool in my book.
Ok, I've got a story & an experience that helped me remember "what the
hobby is really all about" -- about a year ago I found myself at about
50% completetion on my '55 All-American set. Cards were getting harder
and harder to find, and competition on ebay for NM and NM-MT cards was
getting fierce. I noticed somebody on this forum posting in a thread
about '55 AA's, and he mentioned he had some extras for sale. Long story
a little shorter... we made a deal for 18 cards, the prices were VERY
reasonable (some even bargains!), and I was mucho happy. In fact, this
person quoted me a price of $160 on a PSA 8 Nomellini, and in between
the time I picked out my cards and made payment, another PSA 8 Nomellini
sold on ebay for around $250. This collector didn't change his price
(although I wouldn't have blamed him if he did), and I was able to add
a nice Leo Nomellini to my set (along with 17 others).
The name of the collector that was more interested in helping out a
newbie build his set, rather than making the biggest return on his
"investment"? Art, aka SKINSFAN!
Thanks again, man, and this was a GREAT idea for a thread!
(edited to fix typo)
I totally agree with ya'll, let's get back to the enjoyment of collecting and helping each other
Steve
P.S. Lay off Art (SkinsFan). After all, he's a football fan like the rest of us, and a good guy to deal with; he's not an English Major
strictly as a reference:
i recently bought a high-end SGC 8 Nomo on e-bay for $140 inclusive.
I broke it and it went into a PSA 8 for another $8.
That AA set is pretty wild like that on e-bay..the PSA slabs command a real premium thank to the plethera of registry cats.
I just sent 10 sharp raw ones off this afternoon.......the wait is on.
Scumbi,
three suggestions:
1. new "handle and icon picture"
2. take the Dan Dees one card at a time
3. register your DD set and contact the other 8 guys on the set registry, you just met the guy in 4th trying to catch my friend Jeremy for 3rd place (it may come down to a wrestling match at the national). Usually there are upgrades and duplicates floating around.
And I just want to let you know that I think 10 years is awesome..
No good deed goes undone...
PM me..(it is the lock thing next to the sunglasses) and give me your address I will send you for free the following...
hope you and your son enjoy it...

Hmmmmmmm, interesting... back then, a year ago, when I really followed
the prices (because I had less of the set), I remember PSA 8 Nomos going
for $200 or so. But I see your point, and it is well taken. Now we'll
REALLY see if Art knows "what the hobby is all about" when he REFUNDS me
that 20 BUCKS he overcharged me on the Nomo!!
Oh yeah, murcerdude, fill us in on the AA grades when they come back,
cool?
Welcome to the boards.....you will enjoy it.

ahh!.......there's always one that get's away.
For what it's worth,
I have not had much luck at all crossing GAI...and if the centering is OK almost 99% of SGC cards cross equal or higher. My sampling is probably only 12 GAI's and about 60 SGC's in the past 3 years though.
Paul, Welcome & enjoy ! I'm pretty much a newbie here (a month?) but already have experienced the generosity of one of our fellows (Con40). It's also a great place to learn about what you collect or are just interested in.

Now collecting:
Topps Heritage
1957 Topps BB Ex+-NM
All Yaz Items 7+
Various Red Sox
Did I leave anything out?
I'm glad I finally posted and look forward to learning about the hobby and different sets. I only want to buy Dan Dee cards right now, but I'd like to know about the important factors of the different years and makers. I've already picked up a lot of general info.
As for Scumbi, let's just say my hygiene wasn't a PSA 10 back in my late teens. As for the picture, well I kinda look like the Lord of the Rings character a bit. I'm not that hideous but my friends had a good laugh when they saw the movie and pointed it out. I won't be winning any beauty contests I guess. Murcerfan, if it bothers you, I can change it to something a little more palatable. I don't know the protocol.
Best to all and good luck with your cards and sets. I'll be around at night and on Mondays (My day off). I'm not the soundest sleeper and this seems like a good place to spend some time. I feel the guys here are regular, good folk.
If anyone has a place I can go to look up more Dan Dee info, I'd genuinely appreciate the favor.
Best,
Scumbi
Joe Orlando - April 7, 2000 Instead of gum, this Mantle card was packaged with greasy potato chips.
In 1954, the Dan Dee company decided to issue baseball cards by including one card in packages of their potato chips. The set included some of the great stars in the game such as Mickey Mantle and Duke Snider. These large cards, measuring approximately 2-1/2" by 3-5/8", have a very attractive design. Each card offers a wonderful photo on the front with light, off-white colored borders used to frame the great shots. Just one problem...they put these cards in oily, greasy potato chip bags!
The Dan Dee baseball set is one of the most difficult and desirable regional sets in the hobby. The aforementioned packaging procedure makes it very difficult to find these cards in presentable condition, let alone high-grade. As you might imagine, the potato chips bags wreaked havoc on the edges, corners and surfaces of these great cards. If you are lucky enough to at least locate one of these Dan Dees in any grade, most of the time you will disappointed. Staining is most commonly found on the tips of the corners. This creates a real eyesore for potential buyers and an obstacle for those looking to assemble a high-grade set.
Another condition-related obstacle for the Dan Dees was the crude cutting process. Most of the Dan Dee edges are found with an almost "perforated" look to them. No need to worry though. This is simply how they were cut. Just like most cards produced during the 1950s, most of the Dan Dees have a "rough-cut" appearance. For aesthetic reasons, it is probably wise to buy Dan Dees that don't have an extremely rough appearance, even though they were "born" that way.
The borders and the picture quality are other problems that plague these cards. First, with regard to the borders, toning is certainly an issue. Dan Dees can be found with a wide range of tones to the borders. The borders range from an eggshell white to a yellow shade. To add insult to injury, because of the light color of the borders, the aforementioned potato chip grease sticks out like a sore thumb. Even the most minimal stain will diminish the eye appeal of the card.
The picture quality is also sometimes an issue. You will sometimes see that the Dan Dee pictures can range from bright and crisp to dull and blurred. When you are able to find a Dan Dee that possesses really nice picture quality, the card really stands out from average ones. As with the other condition keys to this issue, this is something to focus on if you are considering assembling a high-grade set.
The Dan Dees will always be in demand by collectors. In addition to the difficulty in finding these cards in top grades, there is one major reason: Mickey Mantle. Mantle was not featured in the 1954 Topps set, which is the most popular set for that year, so collectors have to look elsewhere to satisfy their Mantle needs. Bowman produced a Mantle card, but the set--as a whole--wasn't spectacular.
Red Heart Dog Food produced a very eye-appealing Mantle card, but not quite as appealing as the Dan Dee. In addition, the Dan Dee is far more scarce, which makes it extremely desirable. That leaves the Dan Dee as the most desirable Mantle card for 1954 and the entire set receives a boost from Mantle's popularity.
A nice introduction for the set from the SMR
... but I don't agree with a few of Joe's comment:
1. In terms of difficulty of '50's regionals Dan-dees are amongst the easiest, especially in higher grades, as there seems to be a pretty healthy amount of unissued specimens and recently Wilson Franks have been "the ones to own", so they can generally be had close to SMR.
2. Not sure what he's talking about on the rough cuts? unless he had some from an un-cut sheet like a few that were in an otherwise really nice PSA graded set I bought from Mastro a few years back. I had collected a partial set over the years in about vg/ex condition and they are not nearly as appealing as a PSA 7, which is nice enough for me.
3. I rather like seeing the perforation tabs and get worried when i see cards in PSA holders without them.
To my eye they do not lessen the aesthetics and there are only one or two bumps on each edge of the card.
edited to add: Don't change your icon on my account, it just struck me as out of sync with the tone of your post.........I do hope you and toppsgun don't get into it very often
Murcer nice Post
edited to say: Murc great cut and paste job
j/k i found it very informative, thanks for putting it up
it includes a couple pics that did not make it.
Jeremy Linker also has pics of most of the cards on his registered set.

Art- Nice thread. You're right we need as many postive threads as possible. The negative threads do have their place, but they seem to run in cycles and we have definitely been in a "bull cycle" of negativity.
BTW, are you "Vintage Redskins" on Ebay that keeps outbidding me on Philly football? You don't need all those cards
Same some for the rest of us (especially me)
