NEWSFLASH: From the Portland ANA, Coinlieutenant involved in pre-emtive strike against penny-pincher

BigEBigE Posts: 6,949 ✭✭✭
We made a basket of wheat pennies for the young numismatist to choose from at the Portland show and a older collector came by and started looking thru the box they were in "to look for coins to fill holes in his set". Lieutenant told them they were for the kids and they were not for sale. This did not register. Repeat 2-3 times, guy would not take no for an answer, took two pennies and threw a nickel at John and made a break for it, John did all he could do to stop the kids from beating the old guy up---------LOL, John taught the kids not to fight------true storyimage-------------------------------------BigE

Wish I could have seen that. My son did get to pick from the group of coins. When did this little episode occur?

Really a ludicrous scene. I would have gone over the table had the kids not been there. In retrospect, I would should have called security...

After being on the other side of the table, I can now see why some dealers get frustrated as well. I have seen it both ways but this guy takes the cake...

    BTW,

Thanks to BigE for the wheaties and 40% silver half dollars he put out for the kids. Very nice and eyes were lighting up all day.

Oh yeah, and also Accented Hair Kennedy's in PCGS 68DCAM. He gave out about 25 of those.... image

Thats not fair! I never touched the wheaties! I just picked out all the Barber quarters and I only had to whip one eight year old kid to get the last one!image

Seriously you guys had a great give away and made a lot of kids happy at the show. Probably started a few off on their coin collecting journeys. It was fun to watch the kids eyes light up when they got to pick a coin from a box of Indian head cents/Standing Liberty quarters/Barber dimes/Barber quarters etc.image

Thanks for helping promote our hobby!image

I'm dying here! I can't stop laughing - I can barely type through the tears! This is for real? Was the guy drunk? High? A mental patient out for weekend break? This is a classic!

    Russ,

It was for real. It was almost surreal...

And yes Rick, while it wasnt Boiler, I think that he paid the guy to go do it. Too chicken to face the kids by himself...
