I never thought I'd get a Morgan

After the first day at the Portland ANA show, I was back in the hotel room showing some of my coins to my wife and 5-month-old son. He seemed really interested in the shiny quarter eagles that I had -- he'd grab the slab they were in and move it around while staring at the coin. Seeing how interested he was, I decided I'd get him the biggest, shiniest coin I could think of -- a blast-white Morgan dollar. Not a series that I collect, I decided to check out the prices of a 1903 (since he was born in 2003), and was pleased to see that one in MS-64 could be had for under $80. I decided to buy a slabbed one, since I don't know the series at all and since it would make it easier for my baby to hold.

It was a lot harder than I thought to find this coin -- most of the tables didn't have it lower than an MS-65! After looking through several dealer's worth of Morgans, I came across this coin which is blast white but has a few nicks in the field. Still, it looked 64-ish to me and ultimately it was the luster I was intereste in, so I figured I'd get it for my son:

He loved it (and I have to admit, I like it too) -- hopefully it will help get him hooked on coins when he's older. But I'll need to wean him off Morgans...

  • Can't wait to hear you're son's side of the story when he joins this board when he's asked "When did you begin collecting coins?".

  • why would you wean him off morgans? besides being beautiful coins, they're pretty easy to get and reasonably priced

  • About a month ago, I was placed in charge for coming up with a gift for someone whose wife just produced an offspring on the last day of 2003.

After some work, I created a "3 coin set", consisting of an MS63/64 ish 1903 Morgan, A 2003 ASE, and an empty coin holder in the space of the third coin.

The enclosed certificate (professionally printed on heavy and glossy paper stock, and signed by all the well wishers) explained that 1903 was minted 100 years before the baby was born. The 2003 was the year of her birth, and the third coin should be the 2103 dated coin that receipiant has to put into the set herself. The parents were very moved and thought that it was a superb gift, and they really liked the thought that went into it. It was clear that this wasn't something that was store bought, but took some thinking, planning and organizing to do.
  • What an awesome idea! I got him a few 2003 coins (silver eagle, proof set, first flight commemoratives), but this was the first 1903 for him. It would be cool to see what kind of coins are around in 2103. Think the $20 coin will be back by then?
