    That reason is safety related because metal cans can be grounded whereas plastic cannot. Acetone is a pure substance and is not formulated (which implies combining with at least one other substance) for any particular purpose. It just happens that acetone dissolves certain plastics and can be safely stored in others such as polyethylene.
