Every coin begins to tone as it leaves the die, as all United States coins contain reactive metals in varying degrees. There is also artificial tone which is coloring added to the surface of a coin by chemicals and/or heat. Many different methods have been employed over the years. Toned nickels are collectable in their own category and tend to bring very high premiums at times depending on their color and intensity."
