Carbon specks on Buffalo Nickels

Has anyone had any luck removing carbon specks from Buffs? I have a coin with a few carbon specks right at the top of the Buffalos back. Looks like one could remove it with a small pin or niddle. Not sure if it would only open into a bigger hole or flake right off. There's also a spot in the fields where I think would leave a small hole. . I guess I could crack it out and give it a try. I can see I'll need a microscope for this job, any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have never tried, but I would be very interested in your results if you attempt this. I have a MS65 with beautiful luster that has a nasty carbon spot right where the foreleg joins the torso. I've often thought of trying to remove it (or have it done) but I have no experience in the doctoring arena. I'm just to cautious to attempt it.

Caitlin, sometimes what shows (a crater, for example) after a spot has been removed is as bad as or worse than the spot was. There is also the possibility that the coin's surface can be damaged in the process and that the coin then receives a no-grade due to "spot removal". If you haven't done it before, I'd recommend that you not chance it.

That's a pricey coin to be experimenting on. Might I suggest calling NCS.
