I've heard of several people selling gold coins for face value or little above. The other day, a relative told me about a friend of theirs who was offered a double eagle at a little over face value. The person asked if they were sure they wanted to sell it for that price and asked if they knew that it was worth more. The person said something like "That's okay, I only need xx amount of money for it." If he hadn't bought it from her, someone else would have. What's wrong with that?
  • absolutely nothing Tassa. image

I think anyone would take such an opportunity, I know I would. thats one of those "once in a lifetime" things that we all hope for and seldom get.
  • Nope nothing wrong with that Tassa..... As the old saying foes a fool and their money are soon parted!image

Over the years I have heard several reports from bank tellers of people bringing silver or gold coins wanting to deposit them. Even AFTER the tellers tell them that a coin dealer will pay them well more than the face value for the coins, they will usually still insist on just getting face value for them.
  • BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,360 ✭✭✭✭✭
    Condor,

Therein lies the rub. The teller tells them a coin dealer will pay more. The teller probably doesn't know how much but is quite upfront that it is worth more.
Whereas, someone else just asks "are you sure you want to spend it for $50, it is worth more".....no idea how much. Doesn't give an idea who to go to to ask. And, the person knows how much more, at a minimum (gold value and that it is 1oz), it is worth.

At the risk of derision, seems there is plenty of that here tonight, I am more inclined to lean towards how TommyB is viewing this.

Yes, certainly a good "rip" or "score", and, if the person in question was told "it is worth more than $50, just take it to a coin dealer....it is a full ounce of gold!" and then still wanted to spend it, fine. If they were only told "are you sure? Are you sure? Are you sure", then, well, I wouldn't do that to anyone and I guess others are just doing what they will do image

Seems honeywah is very happy with what she did, so, here's hoping she did fully the right thing and the person was 100% cognizant of what she was doing.....after all, honeywah is obviously not the type to take advantage of someone who is not fully cognizant of what they are doing, right?

Honeywah, if somebody approached me with an Eagle and wanted to sell it for face after I told them it was worth far more than that, you can bet I'd be the one to "help them out" too. Sometimes being in the right place at the right time is good.
Also, if you had been off from work that day maybe one of your co-workers would not have said anything at all. Anyway, Good for you Honeywah !image
"If I had a nickel for every nickel I ever had, I'd have all my nickels back".
  • I agree with the Maine-iac. You got the piece fair and square. You were at the right place at the right time.
  • You did good and did right!!
I see the forum "Do Right" has been here questioning each and every persons ethics again!....JMO
  • As an addition to the above post so I don't have to make an edit, here is my view on an individual who always post his comments about people's ethics.

Mr. bochiman seems to always have his nose stuck into this type of thread questioning people's ethics, or, his percieved lack of ethics.
In the above thread, he says, Seems honeywah is very happy with what she did, so, here's hoping she did fully the right thing and the person was 100% cognizant of what she was doing.....after all, honeywah is obviously not the type to take advantage of someone who is not fully cognizant of what they are doing, right?...Here again, he questions someone's ethics as well as their honesty!

Last weekend, he had his views again on a similar subject. The few of us that posted that there has to be some blame on an idividual for making stupid purchases, were called down for "wishing" for people to be ripped off.

Now, he is back again doing the same thing. Maybe, just maybe, he should just once look at the whole picture instead of a portion of it...

    Well Ken,

If you want to get into calling out people by name in a thread like this, thereby sticking YOUR nose into another's spot, go for it.
You are good at it. Just as you are good about always blaming the person getting ripped off.

Yes, I call into account people's ethics. I do it for more than just dealers. Want to know why? Because I try to believe the best in people. I try to think that there is more to life than just getting the best coin at the lowest price. I don't sit there and try to turn things around for a profit all the time so I am not as concerned about getting steals/rips (not everyone who buys/sells does this, but it seems that those that do it and are bragging about it are .....well, I won't say it but it isn't that good.

As for "the whole story"...I alluded to the fact that I didn't know it...I would love to know it.....now, do YOU know it? As you stated last week, there is something called reading comprehension. You aren't too old to learn it Ken, really you aren't image
(And, KEN, that is just MY opinion image )

I also buy stuff from forum members....you know that? And, I buy from those that are people that seem to be trustworthy and have good standards. The coins I collect are not "rare" and there are replacements for them, so I am not out anything by not buying from certain people. My money may not make/break anybody, but I still find it cool to interact with those that have standards similar to me.

To each their own KEN, I am very glad that you jumped in on this one similar to what you say about me. Every Batman needs his imageimage

Now, if you want to carry it further, you are welcome to use the PM function or go find my thread inviting people to attack me there.....I am actually sorry I responded to your thread hijacking here but, well, I couldn't resist image
