I forgot I had this card. Its the TRUE Rookie McHale card.
That Ernie Borgnine was a real looker .
Mantlefan - The martians ravage the world, and I can handle that....but shooting the dog???....now I'm REALLY upset!!!
Virtualizard - I checked out those cards for quite a while, but couldn't find anything "strange"....must be my bad eyes.
thegemmintman - I think I still have that sticker stuck under my mom's kitchen counter...PSA grade = "priceless"!
mintstate - Eerie is right!!!
shuckins - What was Topps thinking??? (Or for that matter what was C3PO thinking?)
cubfan - Loved the Borgnine!! That picture was a few years before he lost his wife on the Poseidon...."LINDA!!!!...not my Linda!!!!...and you killed her preacher!!....You killed her!!!....my Linda!!!"

An entire card dedicated to the Inertial Damping System of the Starship Enterprise....(I included the file here...)
But it's the back of the card really gets me....and I quote....
The Inertial Damping Field System (IDF) generates a controlled series of variable-symetry forcefields that serve to absorb the inertial forces of high-speed spaceflight that would otherwise cause fatal injury to the crew. The IDF works parallel to the ship's structural integrity field (SIF, which augments the mechanical integrity of the ship's spaceframe). Acceleration effects are anticipated by computers, and the IDF is distorted along a vector diametrically opposed to the velocity change, thereby nullifying the force. There is a characteristic lag time for the shifting of IDF direction and intensity, and although most vector corrections can be anticipated, the crew will sometimes feel sudden changes and impacts.
Yeah...I would've guessed all that from the arrows on the front of the card!!!!
And I can't comment about the type of non-sport collector that would own such a card <for the obvious reason!!!>, but I'm betting there were more than just a few of these being passed around at a convention or two!!!!...Hey did you get the IDS rookie???

Welcome to the boards. I'm glad there's another Trek fan on board. I've been a Trekkie my entire life (I'm 41). My Trek card collection is a large and important part of my overall collection. I also have most of the videos, and am currently getting all the DVD's.
Anyway, don't be afraid to chip in with any comments you might have to the posts here...after all, we're all (for the most part anyway) here for the same thing
Peace, and Long Life!
Steve
I would love to hear about your ST collection - anything on the registry? I have the 1997/1998/1999 Skybox Star Trek sets up. And I don't have much competion. I thought I was the only trekkie here.
I don't even remember buying that set of ST, but when they asked for strange...I knew something in my collection would fit the bill.
As far as ST goes, I only own the movies on Laserdisk....couldn't wait for DVD's to get movie quality picture & sound, but they stick out now like my 8-tracks tapes!!! <ooops...showing my age again!!!> And I would need another storage unit for me to own all the episodes, but I always price them when we get into Suncoast video, in case Santa thinks I've been good!
I have been enjoying the boards for the past few years, and just decided to chime in. I hope some of the long time sports people take a second to share their thoughts when it comes to non-sports....I have learned so much from everyone!!!

I don't have any of my Star Trek cards graded. I have the earlier sets; 1976 and 1979 Topps, the individual movie sets put out in the early 1980's, and a few of the Skybox, Impel sets. I don't have any of the more recent stuff like the individual season sets, but I'm looking to get them next time I'm down around Denver/Colorado Springs, since there are a couple of stores down there that carry them.
I also have numerous autographed photos from the Trek conventions I attended in the past, and a few certified autograph cards.
I have been thinking about working on a graded 1976 Topps set, but haven't reached the trigger point yet (too many sports cards still to get)
The DVD's are really nice. They save alot of space and just the overall quality is far superior to the VHS tapes. As I've picked up each DVD set, I donate my prerecorded videos to Goodwill. I'm currently on Season 5 of DS9, since I missed the final 3 seasons when I moved from Colorado Springs to Great Falls MT (Great Falls is the only town in Montana that doesn't get the different Star Trek shows) Once I'm done with DS9, I'm gonna start on Voyager, since I still have never seen the last 3 or 4 seasons of it.
Steve
P.S. What are "8-track tapes"?
Just kidding about the 8-track question I used to have about 4 or 5 of 'em back in the '70s
I've seen quite a few graded 76 ST on Ebay..you might be able to pick some up without much effort, I don't think there are many bidders. It may mean doing what I do...just sell off those "worthless" sports cards to support your "worthwhile" habit. The non-sport sets are smaller, and <from what I can see that you're collecting> MUCH cheaper!!!
Then you can just sit back, relax, and listen to that BTO 8-track <that you never owned>!!!

<< <i>thegemmintman - I think I still have that sticker stuck under my mom's kitchen counter. >>
LOL Too bad since it's worth about $75 raw.
Another Star Trek fan here!
I remeber buying some of these back in 1983 or so... It was topps first try at a non wax wrapper. This and a Jaws 3-D set, also released at the same time, were sealed in a plastic/mylar like bag ( Much like todays packs). I think they also did this with some 83 baseball on a limited basis too.

Thanks, I really liked the wackys as a kid and now that I work in advertising it's a good way to look at my job in a light and fun hearted way.
