I opened a full box of 1953 Topps Archive packs just for the fun of it

Hi Gang, When was the last time you opened packs just for fun? For some time now I have had my eye on 1953 Topps cards. They are really great looking cards, but pretty expensive. I don't believe I can afford to collect 1953 Topps cards along with 1955 Topps and 1956 Topps. So I went out and bought a box of 1991 Topps Archives cards featuring 1953 Topps cards. I had a blast opening a full box of packs for the first time in about 15 years. It's not every day that you can open packs and get a mint condition Mantle, Mays, Robinson or Williams. I know that these aren't as good as having the real cards but they sure were fun to open and sort just like the old days. Now that I have all of these cards, my next step is simple, try to put together a complete set of these cards. It appears that the assortment of cards in this box has left me short of completing the set. I realize that it would be like throwing money out of the window from an investment standpoint. Are these cards generally sold as singles at shows like other cards? Perhaps I could just buy the ones I still need? I also wouldn't mind finding someone else with these cards to trade with either. Anyone have any thoughts on these cool looking cards? Neil

The 53 reprint has had additional cards produced which were not part of the original, which I am lucky enough to have in raw, about ex grade the original/real set, and do add a little something to it. Also the cards are much more durable than the originals.
The 53 reprints are similar in popularity to the 54 Topps reprint set, though not as sought after as the 1952 reprint set. I do have a complete set of each of these, as well as a T- 206, 34 Goudey, and a few other reprint sets. I truly enjoy, and am able to afford, these classic sets even though they are copies.

I did the exact same thing. When I started my 53 set, I decided to open a full box of archives just to see all the cards in the set. It was definitely fun to find Mantle, Mays and Robinson. I must say I was very disappointed in the additional cards that they added into the set. They don't do the original card portraits justice. Just seemed like they were slapped together.
But I have a whole "pack fresh" box. So I'll go through and see which ones I have from your list.

Lothar, no they only did full sets of 1953 and 1954. But there was a "Boys of Summer" archives that reprinted a lot of the Brooklyn Dodger cards from the various 50s sets. The '54 was interesting because Topps didn't reprint the Williamses due to him having an exclusive agreement with Upper Deck. Upper Deck printed the Williams cards and a "brand new reprint" of Mickey Mantle, and inserted them into their "All-Time Heroes" boxes, pretty stingily, too. The Williamses sell for $20 or so each, and the Mantle goes for about $30.
