McFarlane releases photos of Cooperstown Collection

Here goes ...Ryan in home Texas unny (mid windup) Brooks in home white, reaching down for ball, with flip shades. Seaver Mets road grey after windup. Reggie in yanks pinstripe in classic swing pose with shades on. Gibson in home white falling off mound. Yogi in pinstripes in on deck circle with shin pads on. Can't wait to see what chases end up being..................

After seeing the Cooperstown figures, who do you like best? Total votes cast: 104

    Nolan Ryan 33 31.7%
    Brooks Robinson 11 10.6%
    Tom Seaver 0 0.0%
    Yogi Berra 26 25.0%
    Reggie Jackson 21 20.2%
    Bob Gibson 13 12.5%

I personally liked Reggie the best and Seaver the least
  • Have to agree, the Seaver looks like the weakest of the group. I love the old school steal cleats on them. I really hope they do chases of Reggie in A's unny, Ryan in rainbow Houston unny and Seaver in mid eighties Sox unny.............
  • Facially the Seaver looks more like Tug McGraw.

I like the Berra and agree that some of the others would look nice in different uniforms (especially the color of the A's jersey for Reggie).

Cub and Iron - you guys were reading my mind - I wonder if that was a mixup in pics used by the artist - that looks like McGraw.

Like them all!! it says no varianyts or chase? i wonder if that means there will be none like the 12 inch football?

as for the seaver i think its the best one of the bunch!!! must be the logo he is wearing image!

I'd personally like to see the Ryan done in the same style as the Seaver...i.e., full stride just about to release the ball. In the pose they show on the website, all you see is the top of his hat and inside of his leg. You can't see his face at all. It also is just a copy of the Hartland figure that was released in the early - mid 1990's.

My favorite of all of them is the Reggie, followed by Yogi and then Gibbyimage

That just means the picture of the figure showing is not the chase or variant version. Believe me each guy will have a variant figure. I think every sports figure they have done has at least one variant version, some have 2...................

They didnt do any chase in the 12 inch football on vick.
  • Im glad I wasnt the only one who saw the McGraw resemblance. I wonder what that was all about?

  • These are toys, with 200,000+ being made. If you want a REAL collectible, wait until opening day and check out Hartland...we have some really special ones that will be announced. (Think Satchel, among others) Only 2,500 made of each, and they will only go up in value, unlike McFarlands, which will soon go the route of Starting LineUps...image

Great pics - I think overall these are good looking - but I agree as I said earlier - I think there must have been a mixup or they have a "motive" to this?

I have collected all of the new series and they are really nice - the paint work is the best they have done - I'm looking forward to displaying them down the road.

  • Thanks, Mike, for saying that. We've got a great team working here, people who truly love these little figurines, and we're listening real hard to what our customers are saying.

You're gonna LOVE the next group coming out!! We'll be unveiling our new web page around opening day, and if you're a reader of SCD, you'll see a cover story coming up about it.

Ozzie Smith has just agreed to become our company spokesperson, and has filmed a video clip that will be incorporated into the new web site. We couldn't ask for a better mouthpiece than "The Wizard"! image

  • hartlands don't even come close to the detail and realistic features of the mcfarlanes

I totally agree. And only to add for clarification - the two lines are like comparing apples and oranges - the attraction of people to the new Hartlands, IMO, is the nostalgic 'resemblence' to an older product.
I like both lines for different reasons - print run and future collectability not withstanding.

edit for game stuff: sorry to spam the NCAA's - but the Kan/Tek game was unbelievable!!!!!

  • You're quite right about the detail. McFarland is using a computer to do the work. Push a button and voila. Hartlands have a sculpt made by an artist, and you're correct...we WANT to keep the original rather simplistic "look" about them. In fact, we've used the original 18 molds to make the figurines we're selling as "Classics". (We've placed them in different uniforms than the originals however, so the distinction between "then and now" is obvious.)

The "New Classics" will be quite different from what you've seen Hartland release in the past. I've seen the prototypes for the ones coming out next month...I'm tellin' ya's...you're gonna LOVE 'em!!

Don't get me wrong...I like the McFarlands. I just think it's two entirely different realms.

    Gotta go with McFarland's stuff......

If you want to call them "toys" fine...but there is a huge market for them.

  • Of course they're toys! There's 200,000 of each one!
  • BasiloneBasilone Posts: 2,492 ✭✭
There were 200,000 1952 Topps Mickey Mantles too!
  • I just like the total package Mcfarlane does. They look great displayed in the plastic clamshell or busted out and displayed. They incorporate logos and really put great detail in just the packaging, let alone the detail on the figure. Even the new Bagwell from the most recent mlb release has the all star logo on his sleeve for this season. You can get them for 9.99, or get lucky and score a variant off the shelf. What does a hartland go for anyway at retail. I know toysrus and targets have Mcfarlane's and few other major stores carry them. Not even sure I've seen a Hartland figure, is it just a catalog thing............

  • hartlands are like a 65 corvette and mcfarlanes are like a 04 corvette

both good in different ways and both have different fan bases

the hartlands are just crappy looking. here is what i always think of when i see the hartland figures, especially after seeing the ozzie smith one.

  • I have to start out by saying that I own 6 original Hartland statues and 2 of the remakes from the 80's and I love them.

    I also own 0 McFarlanes.

But when I compare the Hartland Gibson, B. Robby and Reggie to their McFarlane counterparts in the link, there just is no comparison to the detail, pose and realistic nature. If I was a killer fan of any of these, Id go for the McFarlanes.

    Just my preference.

Edited to say: Maybe Big Kid can post pictures of the other McFarlanes for comparison

    Keith
  • Well then maybe you should get them out of your front yard. image

  • One shouldn't compare "likenesses" between Hartlands and McFarlanes. That's not what they're about.
I believe the new Hartlands are based, stylewise, on the 40 year old designs. Obviously, technology has made it possible for McFarlane to do what they do. And that's great. I really like the McFarlanes for detail, and I've bought a few.
On the other hand, as a throwback, Hartlands really give you a feel of a vintage collectible.
Early century Tobacco cards don't have nearly the production quaility of a 2004 GU card...but there are collectors for both, and comparing a tobacco card to a 2004 card would also be "apples and oranges".

Someone should post the 2 Brooks Robinson's side by side for comparison purposes. I'll get one of each, but I think the McFarland looks better (the number of figures made are irrevelant to me as long as I have one).

  • Oops.

    BKAH,

That Aaron in your post is actually the Gartlan mini porcelain figurineimage

    Steve

  • the Hartland hammerin hank looks 1000 times better than that thing bkah posted...ew, that thing looks like it was made out of wax by a kid in art class
  • But look at that great paint detail on that Aaronimage. How pathetic image.

After looking at the comparisons, it dawned on me why I am not all that fond of the new Hartlands. And that is because of that base that they are standing on. My favorite Hartlands are Ted Williams swinging his bat, Nellie Fox in fielding pose, The Mick, Musial and Ernie Banks in their trademark batting stances, and so on. None have that thick base and all are in a better action pose than just standing there.

Its just one persons opinion, but I think thats why they seem different than the Hartlands that I have.

    MrRookie,

To me, that was the main problem with the Gartlan mini figurines. At about 4 inches tall, they were just too small to show any real detail. The regular size figurines, at about 8 inches tall, have almost life-like detail. I rank them #2 to the McFarlanes in overall detail and actual likeness to the player depicted. They were made out of cold-cast porcelain, which is really a resin that allows for better detail than real porcelain.

    Steve
  • Of the original Hartlands (Ted, Mick, et al...) 7 have bases. The others are all free standing.

We are using the ORIGINAL molds for our re-release, so everything you're familiar with will be the same in the "Classics", which is simply the old statues wearing new uniforms (away uniforms or pinstripes added, most times...Rocky Colavito was originally in a Tigers uniform, we'll be releasing him as a Cleve. Indian, etc. etc...)

The "New Classics", however, will be on the bases you're describing. These are heavier statues, and this provides better footing.

  • Now the re-release of the classics with different or enhanced uniforms will be something I will want to take a look at image.

I have purchased all their new releases and I think they look great - not the detail of the McFarlane's figures which I actually like better but for a different reason - plus, I do like the fact that the new releases by Hartland are more limited and very affordable. I think the set will display real well. And, no, I do not have stock in the company....just a sucker for nostalgic stuff!

I also think some of the lampooning is really funny - you guys have a great sense of humor - I was affraid, of late, that we had lost our ability to see the humor in life - thanx for the show.image
