1960 Topps Baseball

I have been slowly working on this set for the past year or so. Out of all of the vintage sets, this one seems to be the least discussed here. I don't believe that many (if any) of the active collectors of this set are members of the message boards. Am I alone here? I am doing this set with a budget in mind and I've been doing pretty well. I have almost 100 cards (actually over 100, but I'm only registering PSA 8 or better). I've been watching this set for a while and I'd appreciate any input that anyone could provide - i.e. tough cards to find, stars that are overpriced even at SMR, etc.

Here's my set, if anyone is interested - scans of every card are included.

Thanks in advance.

JEB.

I made a nice trade with one collector on this board, Phil Burnett, a very nice guy... I swapped him some 1960 PSA 8s for some 59 Fleer Teds in PSA 8... he read my housecleaning post a couple weeks ago.

I'd offer some to you virtualizard, but he picked me clean! I have the Musial and Mays left, both in PSA 8, but that's it. I might trade them if you need them. I also have a small stack of NM commons... emphasis on small!
  • Hey Virtual,I've been waiting for you!Every thread about 60's never get a reply.I have 215 9's and about 100 8's but only list the 9's #20 set. This set has a very low pop. to 9 ratio. Also last horizontal set.I started getting 9's two years ago in the 100-125 range now 9's average 225.Many set builders are either finished or close to done and are now upgrading to the 9's. Okay, now that I've pulled you guys out of the woodwork, let me know what you have available in PSA 8.

Tony, do you have a set registered? If so, which one? I've responded to other 1960 posts (the few that I've seen in the past 2 years) and I've even started a few, but I never seem to get any response. I'm happy to see that there is some interest with members of the message boards.

Feel free to email me - jeb@virtualizard.com

***Edited because I re-read your post, Tony. I see that you are the #20 set.***

I am a collector of 1960 Topps too. I especially like all of your scans. Whenever I see yours updated, I click on it to check out the scan. I just really enjoy looking at the cards.

The Curt Simmons is pretty darn impossible. The last time I checked it is pop 3. I had one in my raw set and it graded a whopping PSA 6. There are a number of other cards in the set that are very tough too. Wertz, Crandall, Rivera, Terwilliger, Ridzik, Ferrarese, Burton, Morgan come to mind. There are others too.

Glad to see that you have started a thread on the '60 set. It is a great vintage set.

Here are some numbers I ran back in December of 2003. Percent of PSA 9 cards to overall submissions for each Topps Mainstream set in the 60's....yep...1960 is the toughest!

    1960 - 1402/53237 = 2.63%
    1961 - 3301/70919 = 4.65%
    1962 - 1433/42625 = 3.36%
    1963 - 1888/50705 = 3.72%
    1964 - 2576/38150 = 6.75%
    1965 - 3152/44784 = 7.03%
    1966 - 1934/30435 = 6.35%
    1967 - 3836/43102 = 8.90%
    1968 - 12853/63811 = 20.14%
    1969 - 7572/47779 = 15.85%
  • JEB, you already got some of my extra 8's, but I've got about 45-60 that I'm going to go through one last time and send in. I'll get ahold of you first. Love the '60 set and I agree, doesn't seem to be as much interest in it that this set should warrant!! Good luck and Happy Hunting!

Jeb - great set selection - my first and favorite. Series 1 and 2 vending is around; 3rd series and up not so much. #1 Wynn is extremely tough to find in NQ 8; low pop to stars ratio as well. Add #6 Berberet to Mariner's list of toughies - there was a thread recently (top 10 hardest cards in the 60's?) where most of the short cards of the 1960 set were pretty well listed. #389 is the first card with Maury Wills on it, shouldn't command a premium tho, and the high numbers aren't too difficult. I have a stack of commons I'm getting together to submit; I'll be happy to let you know if any of them 8.

  • The '60 is lower than even the '59 set although the '58 is the lowest pop. when I started two and half years ago there were 777 9's and 7 10's. The tens really jumped after the national.I got my first ten when there were 7 and then out of the blue 11 then 21c in a month. But no new tens in six months.Jeb someone just got a second # 1 card Wynn ! skerbe has it in their mailer.
  • Hi JEB, I've posted a couple of times on this board looking for 1960 Psa cards with only minimal response. I am currently at # 6 on the registry current finest as of this morning and just added a card and upgraded a few. I will put 7's in my set to fill a spot but am currently upgrading quite a bit, i do have a few extra Psa 8 cards and will check you're set to see if there are any you need. and Kevin {Con} thanks for the kind words, i was very pleased with our trade as well. this is an awesome set and good luck on it, and Tony i can't view you're set but i bet it's awesome i've added some 9's of late in my set as well. Phil....

I just checked your set out. Great set! I see that you added Maranda in an 8 and that is a tough card too.

I am like you, I will put my 7's or 6's in there if that is what I have. I am way down the list but I hope to crack the Top Ten here one day. I just need to get more active in the '60 set. Right now I have been spending most of my time and dollars on the '59 set.

Thanks for all of the responses. For now, I'm going to stick with just adding 8s (or better) to my set. This is a long term project for me. If anyone is interested in PSA 7s, let me know. I have a few PSA 7s, a PSA 6, and an 8OC as well from my submissions.

Phil, I sent you a response to your email - haven't heard back from you. I'd like to help you out.
