Was this Kennedy Half auction worth it?

I was clicking thru ebay auctions and came across this Kennedy half auction with only a few minutes left. I made a quick decision to buy it with hope of finding a couple nice coins in the group or maybe completing a couple of the sets for resale.

Do you think thisImpulse ebuywas worth it or should I have passed.

Just wondering what others would have done with only say 3 minutes to decide...

  • Don't see how you could do badly with that. Around $70.00 face value, with
some silver and proofs in there. Looks good to me!

Looks like a pretty good deal to me. You might also get lucky and submit the higher graded coins tp PCGS. The MS 67's go for pretty big bucks. I started my Kennedy sets with obtaining a couple of coins at the bank in 2000. You are off to a MUCH quicker start. Look at the new PCGS grading book and the Kennedy cherry picker guide for the key coins. Congratulations. Hope you get kooked like some of us. It can be very rewarding when you complete your set. Then the upgrades start....... DOH!(Do they EVER end?) Raycyca

    Good Morning,

Thanks for the input.I didn't realize there was a Kennedy cherry pickin guide.I'll have to locate that and get me a copy.I'll definitely get the coins out of that Harco album.I am curious what Russ thinks about this buy?

What do you think Russ? and Which dates or mints are the better dates in the series?

    Thanks,
    Randy

You know, I think that 1964 proof in the first album is an Accented Hair. image

There aren't really any better dates in the series. All the years are pretty high mintage. The 1970-D is frequently touted as "key", "rare" and all the other hype words and does bring a premium, but even it had a mintage of over 2 million. The 1987-P and 1987-D were issued only as part of sets, but the mintage was nearly 3 million.

With these, as with most moderns, individual value is going to be based on condition - high grade in the case of business strikes, deep cameos in the case of proof coins. The later silver proofs (1992 to date) have some strong premiums, but none of those are in this collection.

That said, I think you got a rip - especially if the coins are as he describes. Just a couple of high grade business strikes would more than cover what you paid for the group, plus you get the fun of going through them.

He's right, these are terrible albums. I saw an entire set of SBA's (proof and bus strike) that was completely ruined from sitting in one of these.
