question on a 2003 mint set

This is probably a dumb question but as I was looking over one of my 2003 mint sets and noticed that one of the D cents has a tiny clip to the rim with the sliver still attached to the coin. Is that considered a "mint error" or just a funky coin?

Occasionally you'll see mint set coins or others whose planchets were cut from a sheet
after the cutting surface had already marked it in another position. Sometimes this mark-
ing will be extreme and cause heavily damaged planchets.

Much more commonly (especially in mint sets) there will be a coin which gets underneath
the plastic crimpers which seal these sets. This damage can be pretty severe, especially
on a soft coin like a zinc cent. If this is the case there will probably be a small section of
the cent window which isn't sealed and some damage to the plastic.

Nope, the plastic and the seal are just fine.

Is the clip circular in shape and on both sides of the coin or is it straight.

These sometimes get jammed in some sort of machinery associated with the mint sets
and mangled, but these are straight.

Does it appear to be pre or post strike damage?

The sliver is the shape of a finger nail. I wish i could tell if it were pre or post, (how do you tell?). If i wasn't on this blasted Webtv I could post a pic, but I'm stuck using bear skins and bone knives.

I think cladking is right.....I received several sets with the same type of damage to the cent (about 4 out of 20 I think). I sent them back.....In hindsight, I probably should have sold them on ebay :-).

What coinhusker is talking about is probably split plating on the outside edge of the mintmark. This is very common.
