  • And here's another question for ya...

Which 1953 Topps Mays PSA 8 would you rather own, the one from the current auction:

    Current Mays

or the one from the previus auction at 1/2 the price:

    Past Mays
    Looking for:
    1953 Topps in PSA 8
    1941 Playball in PSA 8.
1952-1955 Red Man cards in 7 and 8
    1950 Bowman in PSA 8
  • Shouldn't the 'past Mays' have gotten a PD? If not I think it should have been down graded to a seven. Doesn't look like that strong of an eight to me.

  • John,

I couldn't believe how many spectacular 1957 Topps 9's were in this auction. Just page after page of them...

  • so let me get this straight..just because you are high bidder for an item at the end of the auction someone can still outbid you? How can you be sure you win an item..or protect yourself from someone going over you?
  • dunerduner Posts: 625
it's all about the call back....when the auction ends, you can opt to have them call you for further bidding...then the game is on...last man standing wins

    per the terms:

Callbacks- “Live Auction” Callbacks can be placed on any lot if the current bid is $1,000 or higher and the bidder is the high bidder at any time before 8:00 pm Pacific Time on the final day of the auction, Thursday, March 25. Callbacks are not automatic and MUST be requested by the bidder prior to 8:00 pm Pacific Time. Incoming phone calls and requests for Callbacks will not be accepted after 8:00 pm Pacific Time.
  • but thats only for cards above 1000.00 according to them because I just called them to ask about it
  • murcerfanmurcerfan Posts: 2,329 ✭✭
    I need a trust fund.
  • The card sold for 361.00 my final buy price looks like 415.00 w/ buyers premium...I am a little concerned...I just got off the phone with them, they told me that call backs are only on cards over 1000.00 yet there could have been a telephone bid placed after the auction ended on the net, and I could be outbid because I didn't sign up for the telephone bidding portion ...this is bs..they can tell me 600.00 and I'd have to pay it cause I put a top bid of 650.00..I dont like this at all..When it ends at 8:00 it should end for everyone at 8:00 not just the internet portion because now they can screw me for an additional 300.00... what prevents them from uping the price to me?
  • VarghaVargha Posts: 2,392 ✭✭
They are completely above board. Your bid will not rise if there are no others. Chris is above reproach in how he runs his auctions.
  • BasiloneBasilone Posts: 2,492 ✭✭
Telephone Bids- Bids may be placed by calling our LIVE AUCTION PHONE LINE 888-337-4492 any time between 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Pacific Time on March 25, 2004. Please be prepared to give your bidder number or username, last name and lot number(s) when calling. Your bids must be placed with one of our phone representatives by 8:00 pm Pacific Time. The phone lines for incoming calls will be promptly shut down at 8:00 pm Pacific Time on March 25, 2004.

From what I understand...if someone calls at 7:59pst and they are put on hold...they can still place a bid even though it may be after 8:00pst when the actually are able to speak with someone.
  • Vargha,
I will take your word for it...Its my first time ever bidding with them and I am not sure how it works...if my top price that I put in on the net was 300 above the final price I just dont want them coming back to me and saying..well there was a phone in bid of 590.00 and since your top bid was 650.00 you still won the card..but your final price w/ premium is no longer 415..but rather 690.00 ...

I understand, but do they update the bids on the site as they are called in?
  • VarghaVargha Posts: 2,392 ✭✭
They are updated online as they get them (to the best of their ability to do so).

  • John -

Wasn't following the 1957 Naragon (already have it in 8), but the Billy Goodman #303 went for a hammer price of $1,275, so add on 15% = $1,466 for a 1957 common!

I started the night with a 1957 BB want list of 11 cards ands ended with 6, with one upgrade (Ford). For that I am happy. As for the price part however, I feel like the last line of Warren Zevon's character in Poor Poor Pitiful Me - "I don't want to talk about it...."

The 1957 Topps Hal Naragon #157 PSA 8 (POP of 15) went for $1898.00. If I had it...I would be looking for the next highest bidder!

I won just one card tonight. It was the 1st ever card for this baseball immortal. It is a POP 1 with none higher. Heck there are just 2 PSA 8s in the whole set. Oh yea...they called him Larry back then.

  • that makes me feel better..thanks...I will look on the site for final prices realized tomorrow and Ill find out for sure....I think the phils will finally end the 12 year braves run!!!

If it's just lawyers, guns and money, then that's sure better than ending up like Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner...

    $899.00 with the buyer's premium.

I think the card is a real sleeper....and a pretty good investment.

There are a number of scrub commons from the 50's that sell for more in PSA 8.

  • well the final price w/ buyers premium is up on the superior sports auction, I can breath easy, the final price was 404.00...I am a happy collector tonight as I hope others that won are as well!!!!

If the card you bought was lot #384...you have to be very happy about the price.
  • it was and I am!!! image very!!!
  • Interesting that the Campanella 10 jumped from $21,000 to over $35,000, yet didn't meet the reserve. I think it's very rare, that a card doesn't meet the reserve in these auctions. But I guess if you have a one of a kind like that, you have to protect the investment. Wonder where the reserve was?

  • "1965 Topps Baseball PSA 8 MONSTER Partial Set (304 cards) $7,500.00"

Either we have a new player in the '65 Registry or someone is up to a serious upgrade. At $25/card, it's no steal, but there ought to be an investigation.image

Personally, I didn't find much I needed in this auction. I guess that means I'm getting close to the end, or else the vintage I follow is drying up.
  • BasiloneBasilone Posts: 2,492 ✭✭

Yea..that 1965 lot was sitting at the like $5250 for some time...I was going to make a play...purely for resale. I'm thinking the lot has alot of stars and high POP commons...so with a total price of approx $8600....that is not a whole lot under SMR...and most of those cards can be had for that price or lower online.

The hammer price of the lot points to a new collector of the 1965's.
  • Basilone,

Nice pickup on the '47 Berra. You may have made the best investment in the entire auction. 1/1, Yankee, HOF, Berra, obscure issue, key card in the set. Way to go!

I would further speculate that the consignor of the card is relatively price-insensitive...

  • Nice run of PSA 9 Rose cards in there ... strong prices too, except for a few of the later issues. You'd think that for a $6k card, the '71 would have been scanned against a white background, but regardless, it looks quite strong. Congrats to all who added to their collection with the auction!
