Ernie Harwell collection to be on permanent display...

Looks like the Detroit Public Library is honoring the
Harwell's with their own room, and the two million
dollars(!) worth of of memorabilia that Ernie has donated
over the years will be on permanent display. I realize that
nobody outside of the area is going to travel to downtown
Detroit to see it, but this still deserves a mention. Ernie
is the epitome of class!

Here's the article

I love this quote:
"I got too involved in collecting just to collect," Harwell said Wednesday
of his numerous and frequent gifts to the Detroit Public Library. "I decided
to donate the items over the years and let people enjoy them."

  • Nice, I'll have to go check it out. I remember listening to Ernie and Kaline all the time when they did broadcasts.

When did Ernie & Kaline work together? As a kid (70s & 80s), I remember Harwell on the radio by himself and Kaline with George Kell on TV. Then they fired Harwell from the radio and around that time I left the state and didn't follow it anymore...

This is a great thing though. I'll have to make a note to go see the collection this summer when I'm back in Michigan.

    From the article on Harwell:

Two days later, a separate collection of Harwell baseball belongings will be auctioned off in Chicago.

Among the items for sale in Chicago are three World Series rings owned by Harwell, and his scorecard from the Dodgers-Giants 1951 World Series pennant game, in which Giants batter Bobby Thomson hit a dramatic home run off Ralph Branca in the ninth inning to win the game. Both players signed the card for Harwell afterward.

How cool would that scorecard be to own? Any ideas on what it'll fetch?

Cool. Harwell will always be the standardbearer for announcers to me. Growing up in Cleveland, we could get the WJR signal across lake Erie, and listened all the time. He was with Paul Carey at the time; I don't remember Kaline. My brother (now a double A play-by-play guy) inverviewed Harwell a few years ago.

You're right, he worked with Paul Carey. Thanks for correcting my memory, LOL.
