PSA/DNA question - has anyone ever seen this?

I've never seen a PSA/DNA graded card carrying only the "Authentic" designation:

'73 Bench auto

Any idea why the card wasn't just assigned a grade? I've never seen a PSA/DNA card without a grade before ...

Robert

P.S. I still can't understand for the life of me why PSA refuses to "authenticate" '84 Nestle cards ... they're using the designation everywhere else it seems.

  • edited to add my mistake the goodriddance is correct the card must not be altered and the autograph good for it to be authenticated
  • you can choose if PSA assigns a numerical grade, or simply and "Authentic" grade
  • Thanks guys. I guess part of my curiousity stemmed from how nice the card looked overall - maybe a PSA 6/7 at worst. I just wish PSA would come up with consistent guidelines for using the AUTHENTIC designation, since they do it for some but not all issues ...

<< <i>I believe they assign an authentic grade to a card were the autograph is legit but the card has been altered (trimmed etc) >>

I asked Carol about this at the last Fort Washington show since I had 8 red man's that I wanted
authenticated. She and Matt confirmed for her that they would not grade or holder a card that
might be considered trimmed/altered. So Don Cherry I think you are not correct.

I suspect that this might not be true. I was with 1420 on Saturday of the show and he wasn't
sure about it either. I don't want to speak for him though.

I hope someone from Psa can clarify this here on this thread as to either why the Bench got
the authentic grade or if I can submit my red man cards and get them holdered if the auto is
ok but the card is trimmed. I don't know if they are but I'm hesitant to spend $20 a card and then
not get them encapsulated. I know the autographs are real since I got most done personally.
I was just looking for the protection side of it.

My guess is that the Bench might have a huge crease in it that it would grade less than a poor
or one. I doubt it. But I'd love to get some answers here.

  • from what ive read on here, you can choose when submitting whether you would like an authentic or numerical grade.

for non autographed cards, i believe PSA grades "authentic" for prewar strip cards, and other cards that had to be hand cut (early '60's Post BB comes to mind)
  • It seems somewhat silly to me to have an AUTHENTIC grade that only applies to unaltered cards. Isn't that sort of why they started using the designation in the first place (i.e., to authenticate genuine '52 Mantles so you have proof it isn't a fake)? In any event, I got the same response as Tony when asking about my '84 Nestle Rose at a show last month (heck, they even used to grade those back in the day).

Echoing the sentiments of others, it would be nice if PSA gave a a clear and definitive explanation of how and when the AUTHENTIC "grade" can be used ...

I was indeed wrong . I edited it 4 minutes before your post.

From the website it reads "Please keep in mind that an autographed card submitted under the PSA card grading and autograph authentication combination service must pass both autograph authentication and card grading authentication in order to be encapsulated."

    goodrid,

Thanks for the info. I did not know this. This information is very helpful. I guess for me I would
rather go for the authentic grade since the cards I had signed are in the ex range. The number
    does not help my cards.

I agree with joker73 on this. But at least I got an answer from reading this thread even if it is
not what I wanted to hear.

    Thanks all!

  • I submitted 14 different autographed 1955 Topps Dodger cards for PSA/DNA authentication at the National this past summer. When I returned the next day all of the cards passed as far as the autographs go and were slabbed with grades except for the 1955 Koufax rookie. The autograph was certified but the card was rendered Re-Colored by the grader even though there was nothing detectable to the naked eye. I then asked if they would slab the card in order to certify the autograph which is really all I wanted. They agreed and used the AUTHENTICATED designation without a grade.
  • Do you happen to have a scan of the Koufax autograph? I recently sent in a Koufax card to PSA/DNA and it came back "Questionable Authentication". I'd like to compare mine to yours if possible. Thanks-
