Question regarding 76/77 OPC NHL Cards???

I purchased a partial NM set of this series a couple of months ago and I had pulled about 40 cards from the set that I had originally thought were shaved or cut somewhat as they were not in line with the majority of the other cards. Then I purchased a bunch more singles from this set and lo and behold, there are some cards that do not line up with the norm.......however, there were also some cards that were way bigger then the normal size also?? The sizes vary by a millimeter on each side and sometimes almost 2 millimeters........

My question involves this.......while I knew that OPC were bad for not getting the centering correct on many of these sets, is it also true that sometimes the surface volume of these cards can be different???

I had assumed always that volume would be the same but in this 76/77 OPC NHL set, there does seem to be quite the variety..........and I have purchased these cards from different buyers.....

Is there any particular way to tell if a card has been shaved aside from its different size?

Someone give this Canuck from Calgary an answer to his conundrum???

Thanks

  • OPC's are never consistent size-wise. and ive noticed that for some reason '76's always have a cleaner (non butterfly knife) cut than other years
  • Would you say that moreso for the 76/77 OPC NHL set, that surface area of the cards not matching is quite common as opposed to other 70's sets?
I have tonnes of 70's NHL OPC sets and I hadn't noticed near the discrepancy like there is for this set!??

I have recd cut cards before and they were obviously cut.........I notice with these 76/77 cards, even with ones that are 2 mm smaller from side to side, that it looks like they are factory cuts!

    Very odd............

    Thanks

Unless it's a Bobby Orr or star card, I don't think people would take the time
to trim 1977 opc commons. However, I always remember opc being pretty
consistent size wise with cards from 1974-1978. You ask an interesting
question that is not easy to answer.

  • I can add a couple of observations to this topic. First off 1976-77 was a better year for o-pee-chee quality wise in both its baseball and hockey sets . Second there was a lot of left over uncut sheets from this year and there was one particular local dealer that bought up alot of these sheets and had a local printer cut them in the mid to late 80's . Since he used similar technologoy that was used to originally cut them (or lack there of ) but was much more carefull in the process . They were impossible to tell apart from the original OPC cuts but it could very well have minute size differences.

  • Hey good too see a fellow chap from Cowtown here..........

And thanks for the replies lads ............ I am still confounded to be sure!

So if I send in my nice Trottier rookie 115 from this set and it is about 1 mm
shorter then most other cards from this year, will PSA deem it to be a Miscut
or will they overlook this as something inherent to that year per se?

Thanks again for all your help....
