The PNG--What a joke!

<< <i>“PNG members are the most honorable and professional figures in the coin business >>

What a crock!! What a crock!! What a crock!! What a crock!! What aaaa crock!!
Having just gone through an unsatifactory intervention with the PNG vs one of their "most honorable and professional figures," I've come to this conclusion.

The PNG is nothing but a "good ole boy" organization.
After four months of dealing with one of their most honorable??? members, IT was the ANA that came through for me.

This statement really torked me off, can you tell?

  • Hmmm. Well, I had no idea that such an organization existed since I ignore holographic stickers whenever possible. However, the recent uproar led me to check 'em out. I just know they did a darn cruddy thing to Ron Gillio. I have bought from him and although I wouldn't say customer service is his strong suit, he does have nice coins at fair prices. The idea that he would be kicked out of the "club" when he hadn't even been convicted of anything speaks volumes about the group.

Yes, that is quite a crock. Furthermore, it's a reckless statement. The most "honorable and professional figures" in the coin business? Figures.....as in "crime figures". I am a coin dealer, not a coin figure.

The PNG is a country club where the big, fat dealers get to mingle and scratch each other's backs. It would actually be a more acceptable and even legitimate organization if they did not have absolutely ridiculous membership criteria. For example, you have to have verifiable assets of over $100,000 to be considered a "professional". Well, I happen to know many small dealers who are extremely knowledgeable AND honest, yet, by PNG standards, they are clearly not "professional" and are treated as lepers were once treated.

Maybe all of the small time dealers should start their own organization; the ANG, or Amateur Numismatic Guild. Isn't that what the PNG is implying by their membership criteria? The truth is that most small time dealers do not need a group to arbitrate all of their mis-doings, since things tend to run more smoothly in the average, working man's level of the market. That, btw, is where coin collecting is not a business, but rather a hobby.

The bottom line is that there is good and bad at all levels of the hobby/business. To suggest that membership in any organization guarantees ethical behavior is an insult to everyone's intelligence.

PS - I qualify for PNG membership but would never consider applying due to the elitist attitudes that they portray. Until they change, that's my stance.

The only time I filed a complaint to PNG about an aspiring PNG dealer (not yet officially in) they helped to resolve the issue in 24 hours. It was a simple thing but they acted within hours. I guess it's better than nothing.

But my best quote is when I asked one of the PNG dealers why they let so and so in who has such a terrible sleezy record of fleecing customers for many years. The answer: "we can monitor their actions better if he's a member." And this does sort of indicate a good ole boy's club mentality.

pcgs openly notes that they are out to profit financially from their endeavors, & rightly so. png hides that fact, & in fact tries to disguise their true motives w/ nonsense claims like they're all about protecting collectors.

    that's the difference

    Agreed.

Does anyone have any experience or information about the phony PNG certificates used by telemarketers a long time ago to defraud people out of millions of dollars?

Maybe this could be a new thread?

No but I'd love to hear about it. I'd like to see one as well.

Michael,. how long have you been in coins? You don't know anything about it?

I floated that which could turn out to be a real can of worms for some people. I may start a thread on it although it is ancient history ( but history nonetheless .

Might integrate with the heading of this thread however.......
