Unlikely that the virus actually originated from that address. Most viruses now spoof the return by using addresses from the computer on which they originate. Since, as coin collectors, we would be likely to have other coin collectors in the address book it makes sense that a percentage of these mails would have another collector listed as the return.

Russ is right on that. And the spammers do it too, I know because for the past week I've been getting a bunch of spam and bounced spam coming into my inbox with MY email address listed as the from address and I'm not sending it out (I run regular anti-virus and anti-spyware scans on my system, and I update my anti-virus and anti-spyware software regularly. Even if I was why would I be sending spam to myself.)

Ditto that, the viruses almost always use a person's address book to replicate themselves - thus - anyone here who automatically saves addresses of those they reply to could send viruses out disguised as being from my email address unwittingly if they had ever replied to any message I sent them.

One good lesson for cleaning out your address book regularly.

  • I concur with the "spoof" email address theory, and can confirm it's a fact.
Thousands of users on government networks for the Army alone have been receiving the same types of infection attempts, all using addresses such as "admin@us.army.mil", or "Services@Army.Mil". I know, because I'm one of the thousands.
I can't speak for any other installation, but all attempts to infect our network on this installation has been futile. image
Besides using a good anti-virus (I recommend Norton 7.6 Corporate Edition, not the home user crap), I would suggest keeping current on Windows Updates to protect against all IAVA vulnerabilities.

I have received over 300 of them today. The tip off is the size of 41k. Some of them are using my e-mail address and they are being returned to me. I contacted my website host and they said somebody is spoofing my return e-mail address.

I've been using McAfee for just as long, but still get viruses. The problem is you can only update your system once per day. If a virus sneaks in before you update, you can still be hit. I have to clean messages stores all the time and STILL find viruses. It is sad.

You are incorrect...you can update at anytime by a mouse click on the Red "M" icon on your taskbar...Mine also updates as soon as I log on to the internet,
