Any advice on getting the best price…

OK so I have been to a few coin shows and I was trying to notice how people would go about asking the price on coins.

Some people asked for the “best they could do”, while others asked what the dealer paid. It seems that at the shows a lot of the dealers and buyers know each other.

Any advice on how to go about asking the price?

  • Don't ask the price, know the value, and then make the best offer.

You could ask "What do you need for this?" Asking "What's the best you can do?" is fine also.
If the price is too high, you can say "Could you go $x?" as a counteroffer.

At that point, you're about done. There isn't going to be multiple rounds of offer/counteroffer.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you make an offer, and the dealer accepts, you shouldn't lower your offer or say you'll think about it. The dealer will assume you don't know what you're doing and your future negotiations will be rocky.

Asking what the dealer paid isn't a viable method, IMHO. It's not necessarily indicative of what the coin is worth and it shouldn't affect what you want to pay.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
