Is this quarter any good?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3904906147&category=11963

I don't have one of that type of quarter, and I'm thinking of getting it. Before I BIN, I am wanting some opinions on it (I mainly want it because I dont have that type, and it looks very nice). If anyone bothers to use the BIN or bids on it, to hell with it, I wont bother. My week has sucked.

This would also suck up all the extra money I currently have ($38.50).

  • First, a Link:

    Link

Trends has this at $45 in G-04 and $52 in VG-08. I'm not anywhere near an expert on this series, but I have two observations: 1) it's probably been cleaned and 2) buying raw on ebay is a crapshoot. That said, the BIN price is not too bad (and not too many dollars), so, it may be worth a shot.

    Personally, I'd keep looking.

  • Sorry for the lack of a link (I'm used to boards automatically parsing url's into hyperlinks).

Probably is cleaned, But at the rate I'm going, I have no plans to sell my collection any time soon, am too broke to get anything slabbed (they are generally high quality, which I can't afford), and I'm too broke to HAVE anything I own slabbed.

WIth all that i've read on this board in the last few days with misslabeled slabbed coins, buying slabbed coins almost seems to be a crapshot as well. As for keep waiting, there aren't enough "idiots" on ebay who sell coins for far less than what they're worth. I want to keep looking, but knowing my luck, I won't find anything worthwhile, or in a condition that looks as decent as this. That, or the bit of money I have will burn a hole in my pocket on something else (Would have been spent on 11 issues of Newtype USA magazine earlier, but I had to leave and missed the end of the auction).

Also, the guy only has a 0.2% negative feedback. That seems to be pretty good.
  • DD - The seller looks Ok but I think you can do better on the coin. Sure, slabs can be a bit of a crapshoot too, but from the big three (PCGS, NGC, NACS) I'll guarantee it's far less of a crapshoot than raw on ebay.

If you want one of these bust quarters (raw), do you have a dealer near you? If so, tell him/her what you're looking for, a price range, and if he/she is good, they should be able to find a reasonably priced, problem-free coin.

I'd just hate to see you be "taken " on ebay!!

  • Oh, belive me, I've been "taken" on ebay plenty of times. As for a coin dealer near me, WVa sucks. The only one I know of is near Ohio (1hr 30min drive for me). And i've only heard of it through a friends father who collects coins, never been to it myself.

I guess I'll see if I cant get ahold of the guy at the shop tomorow and see what he has to say (knowing me, I'll get lost getting there... mapquest cant find the exact location).

*sigh* another one bites the dust.

The last good thing I got on ebay was a 1798 large cent. First (and currently, only) US coin I own from the 1700's. Got it for ~$40, worth about the same (search for my posts, i've posted obv/rev pictures of it).

  • DD - I see there's a coin show in Marietta, OH April 3-4. Must be some relatively nearby dealers at that show. Is that too far from you?

The reason I never bid on anytihng, and use the BIN, is because as soon as you bid on something, expecially coins, it starts a bid-war, and the price just gets driven right above the BIN price.

Yea, it's a bit too far, and WAY further than anywhere I've driven before (and I'm not too excited about driving to unfamiliar places, I quite hate it). Also, my mother would go spastic if I suddenly said "Hey, mom, I'm going to Marietta Ohio. Be back later". Plus it takes gas money, which I also currently do not have. My post office, however, is only a 5 minute drive.
  • What was the "Buy it Now" ?
  • $35 if I recal correctly.
  • Dominus,

If you like this one, AND the people here agree that it's worth it (not positive, but I think it would net a Fine at Anacs), I'll let you have this 1838 for the $37 that it cost me. It does have hairlines from an old cleaning that have toned over and the slightly flattened rim above states on the reverse, though. Let me know. I'm heading to Portland soon and will check back tonight or tomorrow.

  • That looks very nice... I do indeed like that. If everyone else likes it (as you said), then it sounds good to me. If you accept paypal, I can have a friend of mine paypal the money to you (as I don't have a paypal account), I can pay my friend back when I next go to his place, and the coin can be shipped to my addy...

With regard to the EBay coin: stay far, far away! That coin hasn't *probably* been cleaned, it's DEFINITELY been cleaned. There's no way that a coin with G details would be that white, and this one is indeed bright and washed out. Although it is hard to find original bust quarters, it would not be hard to do much better than this one, as some were cleaned a hundred years ago and have retoned decently--this one looks like it just went through the wash. What's more, many collectors of early material prize the original "look" over other factors, so this coin would thus not be easy to re-sell. I hate to see this, because there's nothing better than an original bust coin in around fine or so.

PS: definitely jump on Spinynorman's coin!

  • Glad you like it, Dominus. I want to make sure I'm giving you a good deal on it. No hurry on the payment if you do get it. I won't be able to ship it until next week anyway.
